John Deere GX255, GX325, GX335, GX345 Common Problems This Manual Covers

John Deere GX255 GX325 GX335 GX345 engine dies immediately after starting, only stays running with choke held out

Pull the fuel line at the carburetor and crank the engine; if flow is weak, test the fuel pump against the minimum output spec on page 23, which calls for 6.1 kPa (0.9 psi) and 65 ml per 15 seconds on FH531V-equipped engines. A pump below that flow is starving the carb once choke assist is removed. Replace the pump and inspect the quarter-inch fuel line for cracks before reassembly.

Manual Section: Engine - Kawasaki (FH531V) p. 23
No spark at all, engine cranks over but flatly refuses to fire on any cylinder

Pull a plug and check gap against the 0.75 mm (0.030 in.) spec before chasing electrical gremlins; a closed or fouled gap reads as no spark on a tester. If gap is correct, trace the ignition circuit on the wiring diagram on page 196 and ohm out the off-time delay module (AM128906) for open windings. Replace the module if it shows infinite resistance and confirm the kill switch ground isn't shorted.

Manual Section: Electrical p. 196
Mower deck randomly kicks out or won't hold engagement while cutting under load

Shut down and check PTO clutch air gap with a feeler gauge; spec on page 196 calls for 0.31 to 0.46 mm (0.012 to 0.018 in.). Gap that's grown out lets the clutch slip and overheat under load. Also ohm the clutch coil, looking for 2.8 to 3.3 ohms, and confirm amp draw sits near 4.0 amps at the connector; a low reading points to a burnt coil needing replacement.

Manual Section: Electrical p. 196
Tractor bogs down or completely loses drive the moment you put it under load on a hill or in tall grass

Pop the belt cover and inspect the traction drive belt and tensioner spring for the correct part fitment on page 333; GX255 tensioner assemblies differ from the GX325, GX335, and GX345 setup, so match the model before ordering. A snapped belt or a tensioner spring that's lost tension will dump drive instantly under load. Replace the belt, reset tensioner arm travel, and run the machine empty before reloading it.

Manual Section: Power Train - Hydrostatic p. 333
Engine surges or hunts at idle and won't hold a steady RPM under light load

Clean the cooling fins and shrouding first; trapped debris causes heat soak that makes the governor hunt. Check throttle and choke cable routing for binding, then work through the erratic-running steps in the engine troubleshooting section starting on page 26. When reinstalling the shroud hardware, torque the inch-series fasteners to 3.7 N·m (2.8 lb-ft) per page 14 so vibration doesn't loosen them again and reintroduce the surge.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the recommended service intervals?

Service intervals vary by component. For the air cleaner, elements should be replaced yearly or every 25 hours. Spindle grease fittings and kingpins require lubrication every 25 hours under severe conditions or every 50 hours under normal conditions. Wheel bolt torque should be checked often during the first 100 hours of operation. p. 43

What fluids and capacities does this machine require?

The machine requires John Deere HY-GARD® - JDM J20C for hydrostatic transmission oil. Engine oil capacity is 1.6 L (1.7 qt) without a filter and 1.7 L (1.8 qt) with a filter. The hydrostatic transaxle oil capacity is 4.4 L (4.6 qt). p. 16

How to troubleshoot engine won't start?

To troubleshoot an engine that doesn't crank, first check if battery cables are loose or dirty and tighten/clean them. If the battery is not fully charged, charge it as described on page 312. Next, verify the key switch is working correctly, and if not, test and replace it. Finally, check if the engine has seized or if the starting motor or solenoid is defective, referring to the Engine Repair Section or page 316 for further tests. p. 30

What are the valve clearance specifications?

For the FH531V engine, the cold valve clearance specification is 0.075 - 0.125 mm (0.003 - 0.005 in.). This specification is critical for the valves to seat properly. p. 23

What torque specifications are listed?

Key torque specifications for the FH531V engine include the Engine Mounting Cap Screw Torque at 26 N·m (230 lb-in.), the Flywheel Bolt Torque at 56 N·m (41 lb-ft), and the Spark Plug Torque at 15 N·m (132 lb-in.). Always use an appropriate torque wrench and ensure fasteners are clean. p. 25
