Pull the fuel line and check for varnish or debris clogging the shutoff solenoid, which is torqued to 5 N-m (45 lb.-in.) at the carburetor. Drain stale fuel from the tank and bowl, clean the strainer, and refill with fresh gas. Check the troubleshooting procedures on page 397 for fuel supply and internal binding checks if stalling continues under load.

Inspect the PTO drive belt for glazing or slack, and check the idler sheave locknut, torqued to 59 N·m (44 lb.-ft.), for looseness that lets the belt slip under load. Verify the seat and brake PTO safety switches show continuity, and inspect wiring for chafing near the deck pivot. Walk through the deck drive diagnosis on page 672 to isolate a bad clutch or spindle brake.

Test for continuity across the 20A main fuse first; a blown fuse kills cranking even with a strong battery. Verify the key switch, brake switch, and PTO sense switch each pass power correctly, then bench-test the starting motor solenoid for click and pull-in. Follow the cranking circuit diagnosis to trace the fault step by step.

Remove the oil fill cap and inspect the seal; a cracked O-ring or a cap seated crooked lets oil weep past the fill tube during refill. Reinstall the cap fully seated by hand until it locks down. For single-cylinder engines, refill to the 1.4 L (48 oz.) capacity and recheck the dipstick against the fluid capacities chart on page 28.

Clear grass clippings and debris packed into the cooling fins and shroud with compressed air; restricted airflow drives cylinder temperature up fast. Pull the spark plugs and regap to 0.76 mm (0.030 in.) if fouled from varnished fuel, then clean or replace the carburetor jets causing the surge. Check the technical specifications on page 35 for correct plug clearance before reassembly.
