New Holland TC40DA, TC45DA Common Problems This Manual Covers

New Holland TC40DA starter will not engage, or cranks but the engine never fires

Check that you are sitting in the operator's seat or that the parking brake is engaged. Page 26 explains the starter will spin without either, but the fuel solenoid never energizes. Verify the PTO modulation lever and mid PTO lever are OFF and the range or shuttle lever is in neutral. Do not bypass the neutral start switches (page 9), and never crank longer than 30 seconds.

Manual Section: Engine Starting p. 26
Battery too weak to turn the starter and tractor needs a jump start

Wear eye and skin protection, shield your eyes, and keep sparks and flame away from the battery (page 27). Connect positive to positive, then run the auxiliary battery negative to the tractor starter. Start only from the operator's seat, idle, switch on the lights, and disconnect in reverse order. Verify any replacement battery meets 600 cold cranking amps at -18°C, per page 74.

Manual Section: Engine Starting p. 27
Engine stalls or will not restart after running out of fuel or changing the fuel filter

Open the fuel shutoff valve, then open the bleed screw at the pump and close it when air-free fuel flows, following page 80. Push the hand throttle to high speed and crank a few seconds. If it is still air-bound, loosen the injector line fittings, crank until clean fuel flows, and tighten to 24-29 N·m. Check for leaks with cardboard, never your hand (page 79), and crank 30 seconds maximum.

Manual Section: Fuel System Maintenance p. 80
Engine running hot during field work with coolant low in the overflow tank

Check coolant in the overflow tank with the engine cold. If it sits below the cold level line, add a 50/50 solution of permanent antifreeze and water, per page 70; plain water weakens protection. Clean chaff and dirt from the radiator fins, since these tractors have no front screen. If you must open the radiator cap, cover it with a thick cloth, turn to the first stop, and let all pressure escape.

Manual Section: Cooling System Maintenance p. 70
Brake pedal travel excessive or one pedal travels farther than the other

Loosen the locknut and rotate the brake rod until each pedal shows 19 mm-30 mm of free play, per page 87. Lengthening the rod adds free play. Test drive to confirm both rear wheels brake equally. Then set the parking brake link so the clevis pin just touches the top of the lever slot, and road test for a straight stop.

Manual Section: Brake Adjustment p. 87
Engine shuts off about two seconds after the operator stands up from the seat

Engage the parking brake and move the range lever (HST) or shuttle lever (gear) to neutral before leaving the seat. Page 26 explains the engine cuts out otherwise. Always set the parking brake before getting off, because on HST tractors the transmission will not hold the tractor (page 32). Do not bypass the neutral start switches (page 9) to get around it; fix the habit and get back in the field.

Manual Section: Operation p. 26

Frequently Asked Questions

Why will the New Holland TC40DA/TC45DA not move in forward or reverse?

The tractor will not move if the range lever is not in a gear or if the shuttle lever is in neutral. Additionally, on HST models, the transmission will not hold the tractor from moving if the parking brake is not engaged. Always ensure the parking brake is set before leaving the seat, as the transmission does not hold the tractor. p. 32
