This is the factory technical manual (TM-4363) for the John Deere 1640, 1840, 2040, and 2040S utility tractors, all 1,256 pages of it. These are the four-cylinder 3920 cm3 (239 cu.in.) diesels rated at 2500 rpm, and this book covers every bolt on them: tractor separation and split procedures, the collar shift and Hi-Lo and creeper transmissions, final drives, PTO, mechanical front wheel drive, hydrostatic and manual steering, brakes, rockshaft and selective control valves, plus the OPU and SG2 cabs with air conditioning. You get specifications, special tools, wear limits, and step-by-step teardown and assembly with photos. If you are keeping one of these tractors working instead of paying a dealer, this is the book the dealer techs used.

John Deere 1640, 1840, 2040, 2040S Common Problems This Manual Covers

Hard starting or rough running after the tractor has been sitting, usually fuel starvation or air in the lines

Drain the water trap, change the fuel filter, check the lines for kinks or blockage, then bleed the system. The Fuel and Air Intake System section covers the tank, water trap, filters, and cold weather aids with the full bleed procedure.

Manual Section: Fuel and Air Intake System p. 195
Weak or intermittent hydraulic lift on the rockshaft

Check transmission/hydraulic oil level and condition first, since low or contaminated oil mimics a bad pump. Then follow the pump test procedures in the Hydraulic System section before condemning the pump, and inspect the rockshaft and control valves per the same section.

Manual Section: Hydraulic System p. 883
Clutch will not fully disengage, or the tractor creeps with the pedal on the floor

Nine times out of ten this is linkage adjustment and free play, not a worn clutch. The Power Train section gives the adjustment specs and, if the clutch really is done, the separation procedure in the General section gets you in to replace it.

Manual Section: Power Train p. 423
Engine runs hot under load or in summer work

Check coolant level, then clean the radiator core and screen, since chaff and dirt choke airflow long before anything internal fails. The Engine section covers the radiator and tune-up specs, and the General section lists cooling system capacities and service intervals.

Manual Section: Engine p. 189

Frequently Asked Questions

My tractor sat all winter and now it cranks but will not start. Where do I look first?

Fuel, almost every time. These are mechanical injection diesels with no electronics, so start at the tank and work forward: water trap, fuel filter, lines, then bleed the air out of the system. The Fuel and Air Intake System section (pages 195-216) covers the fuel tank, water trap, and cold weather starting aids, with the bleed points and filter service laid out step by step.

The three-point hitch is weak or drops under load. Does the manual cover the hydraulic pump and rockshaft?

Yes, in depth. The Hydraulic System section runs from page 883 to 1108 and covers the pumps, rockshaft, selective control valves, hose couplers, and remote cylinders, including test procedures to tell a tired pump from air in the system or low oil before you tear anything apart. Remember the transmission and hydraulics share oil on these tractors, so check level and condition first. p. 883

Does this manual show how to split the tractor for clutch work?

It does. Tractor separation procedures are in the General section (pages 4-188), and the clutch itself, along with the Hi-Lo shift unit and creeper transmission, is covered in the Power Train section (pages 423-750). It shows the linkage adjustment too, which fixes most clutches that drag or will not fully release without splitting anything. p. 423

Which models and transmissions does this cover exactly?

The 1640, 1840, 2040, and 2040S, in one book. It covers the collar shift transmission (47 liters initial fill, 39 liters on a change for the 1640/1840/2040), the Hi-Lo shift unit, the creeper option, final drives, PTO, and mechanical front wheel drive. Cab tractors are covered as well: OPU and SG2 cabs, roll guard, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. p. 12

I am chasing electrical gremlins - lights, gauges, charging. Is the wiring covered?

The Electrical System section is one of the biggest in the book, pages 217-422, with wiring harness diagrams, controls and instruments, lighting, the starting motor, and the alternator. This is a fully mechanical era tractor with no ECU and no fault codes, so diagnosis is done with the diagrams and a test light or meter, and the manual walks you through it circuit by circuit. p. 217
