Part of the John Deere Repair Manuals.
This is the repair side of the John Deere 5R library: one manual covering all six 2008-2014 models - 5080R, 5090R, 5100R and the narrow 5080RN, 5090RN, 5100RN. It walks the full teardown and rebuild of the 4.5L 4045HL284 turbo engine (80, 90 or 100 hp depending on model), the PowrQuad transmission clutch packs, MFWD front axle and final drives, steering, brakes and the hydraulic system with SCVs and rockshaft. What matters is the numbers: assembly torques, valve clearances, rolling drag torque on the differential, hydraulic pressure test values, plus the JD special tool list. If you are splitting one of these tractors or pulling the head, this is the book with the specs.

John Deere 5080R-5100RN Common Problems This Manual Covers
Engine down on power or smoking, suspected head, piston or valve wear at high hours
The Engine section gives the full 4045 top-end and bottom-end overhaul: cylinder head removal, valve work with the 0.36/0.46 mm clearance settings, piston and liner inspection limits, crankshaft and timing procedures, and every assembly torque for the rebuild.
Manual Section: EngineOverheating, coolant loss or a cap that no longer holds pressure
The Fuel, Air Intake, Cooling and Exhaust section covers cooling system repair with the numbers that settle the argument: 50 to 60 kPa system test pressure, 82°C thermostat opening, and 70 to 90 kPa cap high-pressure valve spec, so you test instead of guessing and swapping parts.
Manual Section: Fuel, Air Intake, Cooling and Exhaust SystemsPowrQuad slipping under load or losing a range
The PowrQuad Transmission section walks clutch pack disassembly, plate inspection, gear and shaft removal and valve service, with the assembly torques and setup steps needed to get the packs back together so the repair holds instead of slipping again in a season.
Manual Section: PowrQuad TransmissionMFWD front axle noise, leaking final drive seals or driveline play
The Drive Systems section covers MFWD and front axle teardown, final drive and differential rebuild, including the rolling drag torque procedure for setting bearing preload correctly - the step that decides whether the axle lasts or eats its new bearings.
Manual Section: Drive SystemsFrequently Asked Questions
Does this manual cover error codes and diagnostics for the 5080R/5090R/5100R?
No, and it is worth being straight about this before you buy. Deere splits these tractors into two books: this Repair manual holds disassembly, assembly, torques and clearances, while the separate Diagnostics and Tests manual holds the DTC code tables and circuit diagrams. If your problem is a code on the display, you want the diagnostics book. If you already know what is broken and need to fix it, this is the one.
Are the actual torque specs and clearances in here, or just procedures?
The specs are in here, and that is the main reason to own it. Each section carries its assembly torques - cylinder head, main and rod bearings, PowrQuad shafts, final drive hardware - plus a general bolt and fitting torque chart in the General Information section. Engine data like valve clearance (0.36 mm intake, 0.46 mm exhaust, hot or cold) and firing order 1-3-4-2 are printed where you need them, not scattered.
Does it cover the PowrQuad transmission rebuild?
Yes, there is a dedicated PowrQuad section covering clutch packs, gears, shafts and control valves through full disassembly and reassembly with torques. This is the job where guessing gets expensive - clutch pack stack-up and valve work need the printed procedure. If your tractor slips in a range or loses a gear, this section is what a dealer tech would be working from.
Which engine variants are covered, and does one manual really fit all six models?
All six share the same 4045HL284 four-cylinder, 4.5L (276 cu.in.) turbo engine with a 106.5 mm bore and 127 mm stroke - the models differ mainly in power (59/66/74 kW, so 80/90/100 hp) and the RN narrow chassis. So yes, one repair manual covers the whole family, with the model-specific values like charge pressure and max torque listed per rating.
Can I do hydraulic pressure tests with this manual?
Yes. The Hydraulic System section includes pressure test procedures with the target values, starting from the 1400 kPa (14 bar) minimum standby pressure, plus pump, SCV, rockshaft and hitch repair. You will need a gauge set, and some checks reference JD special tools listed in the Special Tools section, so look those up before you schedule the job.
