Part of the John Deere Repair Manuals.
TM1221 is the 586-page John Deere 2040, 2240 Technical Manual PDF (Serial No. 350,000-up) that Deere wrote for its own service departments, covering the Roto Diesel fuel injection pump, the rockshaft, and every other system end to end. Factory wiring diagrams trace every harness from the alternator through the lighting circuits, and the hydraulic section walks through system tests on the pump, rockshaft, and selective control valves before you ever split a housing. Power train coverage runs from the Hi-Lo shift unit and reverser transmission through the differential, final drives, and independent PTO. Set up the 2-post ROLL-GARD with crossbar cap screws and U-bolt nuts torqued to 230 N·m (170 ft-lbs), torque front wheel rim-to-hub bolts to 180 N·m (130 ft-lbs) on tractors without MFWD, and hold clutch pedal free travel at roughly 25 mm. Guess on a clutch adjustment and the price is a second split. Bookmarked and text-searchable, this download puts the right torque and clearance figures in front of you instead of a forum guess.

John Deere 2040, 2240 Common Problems This Manual Covers
John Deere 2040, 2240 hydraulics hot, loud, and chattery after 20 minutes of mowing
Check reservoir oil level first, then test pump output. At 2000 rpm and 14000 kPa (2050 psi), the pump must deliver at least 34 L/min (9.0 gpm) per the specs on page 447. Low output with a hot, whining pump means internal wear; inspect the by-pass valve spring against its 68 mm (2.68 in.) free length on page 506.
Manual Section: Hydraulic System p. 447Three-point hitch creeps up by itself during operation
Check the rockshaft control linkage adjustment first -- a misadjusted valve can raise the hitch on its own even with the lever in neutral. Page 452 sets the control lever friction pin at 15 ± 5 mm (0.6 ± 0.2 in.) from the front of the quadrant slot; reset it there before suspecting the valve itself.
Manual Section: Hydraulic System (Rockshaft Adjustments) p. 452Three-point hitch drops to the ground after the tractor is shut off
Remove the rockshaft cylinder and replace the piston seals and valve housing O-rings -- worn seals let the hitch settle once pump pressure drops at shutdown. Torque the cylinder-to-housing cap screws to 70 N·m (50 ft-lbs) and lift arm cap screws to 120 N·m (85 ft-lbs), both on page 452.
Manual Section: Hydraulic System (Rockshaft Adjustments) p. 452Engine stalls or loses power unexpectedly
Check the fuel return line at the injection pump first -- the book lists a damaged return line under "Engine Starts and Stops" and a restricted one under "Fuel Not Reaching Fuel Injection Nozzles" (page 133), both causing stalling or power loss. Replace the hose and clamps rather than reusing a stretched one, torque the bleed and return line adapter at the injection pump to 16 N·m (12 ft-lbs), page 131, then bleed the system and tighten bleed plugs to 3.5 N·m (2.5 ft-lbs).
Manual Section: Fuel System (Diagnosing Malfunctions / Roto Diesel Fuel Injection Pump) p. 131Steering column and hydraulic housing get too hot to touch during loader work
The steering runs off the tractor's one closed-center hydraulic circuit, not a separate steering system -- the book's own Power Steering Diagnosing Malfunctions (page 426) traces sluggish/insufficient steering back to the pressure control valve and the hydraulic pump, the same components serving the rockshaft. Test system pressure first: at rest (standby) it should hold 15500 kPa (2250 psi, page 447); under load (operating) it runs at 14000 kPa (2050 psi, page 11, where the system is also specified as closed-center, constant-pressure). Remove the pressure control valve and measure its spring: 117 mm (4.62 in.) free length per page 509. Replace a short or weak spring.
Manual Section: Hydraulic System p. 509Frequently Asked Questions
What are the torque specifications for the John Deere 2040/2240 wheel bolts?
For tractors with steel wheel disks, the rear wheels to rear axle torque is 240 N·m (175 ft-lbs). For tractors with cast wheel disks or rack-and-pinion axles, the torque is 400 N·m (300 ft-lbs). p. 13
What is the torque specification for the cylinder head bolts on the John Deere 2040/2240?
The cylinder head to cylinder block cap screws should be torqued to 130 N·m (95 ft-lbs). These screws should be dipped in oil before installation. p. 71
What are the hydraulic pump replacement specifications for the John Deere 2040, 2240 tractors?
The hydraulic pump has a delivery of 22.6 cm³ per pump shaft revolution. The minimum delivery at 2000 rpm engine speed and 14000 kPa (140 bar; 2050 psi) operating pressure is 34 L/min (9.0 gpm). p. 447
What is the valve clearance specification for the John Deere 2040, 2240 engine?
Intake valve clearance is 0.35 mm (0.014 in.) and exhaust valve clearance is 0.45 mm (0.018 in.), measured with the engine hot or cold. p. 7
What is the engine crankcase oil capacity for the John Deere 2040/2240?
The engine crankcase capacity without a filter change is 6.5 L (1.7 U.S. gal.). With a filter change, the capacity is 7.0 L (1.8 U.S. gal.). p. 11
