Check the transmission pump output first: minimum acceptable flow is 7.5 gpm at 1900 rpm (page 277). If output is low, inspect the check valve for wear — a failed check valve dumps oil from the reservoir back to the transmission, starving the high-pressure pump. Verify standby pressure holds between 2200 to 2300 psi (page 295). Run the leakage test on page 277; anything over 150cc per minute indicates internal leakage requiring teardown.

Verify oil pressure at 1900 rpm falls between 25 and 40 psi (page 68). If pressure is low, check oil level and condition first, then move to the troubleshooting procedures starting on page 36. Inspect the friction disc for oil contamination — a leaking rear crankshaft seal will saturate the facing and cause both slip and chatter. Test battery cold cranking capacity: diesel applications require 830 amps at 0°F (page 142). Load-test the battery before assuming a starter problem. Run the starting circuit diagnosis on , paying attention to the high-resistance test — corroded cable ends at the starter or ground strap are the most common cause of slow crank. Check alternator output at 1443 rpm, which should read 40-45 amps at 13.5 volts (page 150) to confirm the battery is staying charged between starts.

Set the Marvel-Schebler carburetor idle adjusting needle to approximately 1-1/2 turns open from lightly seated (page 112), then fine-tune for smoothest idle. Verify fuel pump static pressure is between 3.5 and 4.5 psi (page 112) — low pressure starves the main circuit under load and causes black smoke. Run the time cycle test outlined on to establish whether the problem is pump output or internal rockshaft leakage.
