John Deere 322, 330, 332, 430 Common Problems This Manual Covers
John Deere 322 PTO clutch rattles at engagement and mower blades cut out under load
Measure armature-to-rotor clearance with a feeler gauge; anything off the 0.46 mm (0.018 in.) spec on page 81 means shims or a new clutch. Spin the bearing and feel for roughness while the clutch is apart. Torque the crankshaft cap screw to 47 N·m (35 lb-ft) on reassembly, following page 80.
Manual Section: Electrical Repair p. 81Engine cranks but won't fire after winter storage, smells like stale fuel
Drain the stale fuel, then pull the carburetor and clean the bowl, jets, and passages. Test fuel transfer pump output before blaming the carb; you need at least 14 kPa (2 psi) and 200 mL in 30 seconds, per the checks on page 318. After reassembly, set slow idle to 1350 ±50 rpm using page 317.
Manual Section: Engine, Fuel and Air System Checkout and Diagnosis p. 311Hydraulic lift raises mower deck slowly or the deck drops under load when warm
Test implement circuit pressure with the lift lever held; you should read 5861 to 6722 kPa (850 to 975 psi), covered on page 499. If pressure checks out, verify pump flow against the 11 L/min (3 gpm) spec on page 500, then check control valve leakage, which must stay under 15 mL/min (1/2 fl oz/min). Replace contaminated fluid and filter.
Manual Section: Hydraulic System Checkout, Operation and Diagnosis p. 527Tractor creeps forward in neutral or loses ground speed climbing slight grades
Check transmission oil level and inspect the filter for plugging before opening anything. Test charge pressure at operating temperature; the pump needs 620 to 1240 kPa (90 to 180 psi), detailed on page 498. Low charge pressure points to a worn charge pump or stuck relief valve. Adjust the control linkage until neutral is true, then road test.
Manual Section: Power Train Checkout, Operation and Diagnosis p. 483Frequently Asked Questions
