Both run the same block family: a 4.5 L four cylinder turbo diesel making 77 kW (105 hp) in the 6405, and a 6.8 L six making 84 kW (114 hp) in the 6605. John Deere 6405, 6605 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Engine hard to start, stalls, or will not fire at all
Start at the Tune-Up group on page 63. If water or sediment has settled in the filter, loosen the drain screw and the bleed screw, retighten both as soon as the deposits have drained, and if there was water in the filter also slacken the drain screw under the fuel tank by one turn, retightening it to 12 N·m (9 lb-ft). Then bleed the air from the fuel system: the manual states the fuel system must be bled whenever it has been run dry. Only after that chase injectors or the injection pump.

Check the pressure setting before condemning the pump. Page 1049 states the selective control valves are factory adjusted to 18000 kPa (180 bar; 2610 psi), and page 1050 adds that one full turn of the adjustment changes the pressure by approximately 4600 kPa (46 bar; 670 psi), so a small mis-adjustment moves the setting a long way. Verify oil level and filter condition first, then measure against that figure rather than guessing from how the implement behaves.

The rear PTO clutch is a serviceable pack: page 770 walks through repairing it, taking out the cover cap screws, lifting the hub and disks out of the clutch drum and compressing the springs with special tool JDT24A to remove the snap ring. The manual warns to use a 50 x 12 mm (2 x 0.5 in.) washer with the tool or the bearing cone may be damaged. Inspect the disks for wear before assuming an electrical or hydraulic fault.

Wet disk rear brakes fade when fluid runs low or air gets into the circuit. The Steering and Brakes section covers bleeding the system, brake valve repair and rear brake disassembly, so you can decide between a reseal and replacing worn disks.

My 6405 will not move and the PTO does not work. Will this manual actually help me chase that down?
Yes, and that exact pairing is worth tracing methodically because the transmission clutch and PTO both run on hydraulically controlled wet disk clutches. The manual gives you the Transmission, Drive Systems and Hydraulic System sections to check pressure supply and clutch operation, and the Electrical System section to test the PTO relay, solenoid and wiring before you split anything. p. 770
The tractor is hard to start or stalls under load. Does the manual cover the fuel system properly?
Section 30 covers the whole chain: fuel filters, bleeding air out of the lines, the distributor type injection pump, injectors, the dry type air cleaner with its safety element, and the cold weather starting aids. Nine times out of ten a hard start on these engines is a clogged filter or air on the suction side, and the procedures here let you rule those out cheap before touching the pump. p. 63
Are the torque values and tune up specs in here, or do I still need to hunt them down?
They are in the General Information section along with tune up procedures and lubricant specs. Engine specs are printed too, for example cold valve clearance of 0.31 to 0.38 mm on the intakes, rated speed of 2300 rpm, and the correct engine speeds for 540 and 1000 rpm PTO work. p. 27
Which transmissions does it cover? Mine has the Power Reverser.
Both factory options are covered in full: the SyncroPlus synchronized transmission and the Power Reverser, which shifts direction under load without touching the clutch pedal. The Transmission section also covers the shift controls, the range transmission and the non synchronized creeper reduction that drops ground speed about 90 percent in ranges A, B and C. p. 489
Do I need a laptop or diagnostic tool to use this manual?
No. The 6405 and 6605 are mechanical tractors from before onboard diagnostics, so there are no fault codes to read and nothing to plug into. Every repair in this book is done with hand tools, a multimeter for the electrical circuits, and pressure gauges for the hydraulics, following printed step by step procedures.
What is the torque for the rear wheel retaining cap screws?
On tractors with a flanged rear axle the wheel retaining cap screws are tightened to 500 N\u00b7m (370 lb-ft). The value is printed on page 489. p. 489
