Need the factory numbers for your John Deere 355D? This 403-page John Deere 355D Technical Manual PDF (OEM #TM1771) covers the diesel lawn and garden tractor from engine to mower deck. Inside: full wiring harness schematics with circuit-by-circuit operation (power, start, charging, PTO), hydraulic lift system diagrams, and step-by-step repair procedures for the hydrostatic transaxle, steering valve, brakes, and the 38, 44, 48, and 54-inch mower decks. You also get spec tables for metric and inch fasteners, O-ring fittings, lubricants, and coolant. Fill the crankcase with 2.27L of oil when you swap the filter, and confirm the battery still cranks at 500 cold cranking amps before you blame the starter. No more chasing wiring faults with a multimeter and a prayer. Bookmarked PDF with a live text layer; jump to any section or search a spec by keyword and get back to wrenching.

John Deere 355D Common Problems This Manual Covers
John Deere 355D diesel cranks slow and won't start after winter storage, glow plug light stays off
Test battery voltage first; anything below 12.4 volts, charge it or load-test against the 500 cold cranking amp rating on page 12. Clean and tighten both terminals. Then check glow plug resistance, 1.3 to 1.7 ohms per the spec on page 97, before working the cranking checks starting.
Manual Section: Diesel Engine TroubleshootingEngine starts but stalls when load increases, runs rough and hunts at low idle
Replace the fuel filter before chasing anything else; a half-clogged element leans the engine out under load. Bleed the fuel system, then verify slow idle sits at 1000 plus or minus 50 rpm, spec on page 31. Run the fuel and air intake checks starting, and test the seat interlock switch for intermittent cutout.
Manual Section: Diesel Engine Troubleshooting p. 31Hydrostatic transaxle sluggish in forward and reverse, whines under load, loses drive on hills
Check transaxle oil level cold before condemning the pump; low fluid pulls air into the circuit and kills drive. Drain and refill with 4.3 L of Low Viscosity Hy-Gard, capacity spec on page 232, and replace the filter. Inspect the traction drive belt for glazing and check pedal linkage in the Power Train section starting on page 230.
Manual Section: Power Train - Hydrostatic p. 232Mower deck vibrates badly at full throttle and leaves uneven strips of uncut grass
Sharpen or replace the blades first, then measure the tips: outside tip-to-tip height difference over 3 mm (0.125 in.) means a bent blade or spindle, spec on page 348. Level the deck to a 3 to 6 mm front-to-rear rake per page 349, then spin each spindle by hand and feel for bearing roughness.
Manual Section: Mower Deck Troubleshooting p. 348Steering feels heavy and slow to respond, front wheels shimmy at transport speed
Grease every steering pivot and spindle fitting first; dry bushings cause most heavy steering complaints. Check tire pressure, then inspect tie rod ends and drag link for slop. If the wheel wobbles on the shaft, retorque the steering wheel nut to 38 N•m, spec on page 287, and run the leakage test in the Steering section starting on page 286.
