John Deere 5415, 5615, 5715 Common Problems This Manual Covers
John Deere 5415 hydraulic system pressure loss, slow SCV response and weak lift under load
Check the open center hydraulic system pressure spec on page 596; it should read 18995 kPa (190 bar / 2755 psi) at rated flow. If pressure sits well below that, inspect the pump for worn gears and drain the reservoir to check for contaminated or aerated fluid before replacing seals.
Manual Section: Hydraulic Pump and Filter p. 596Transmission won't engage gears smoothly, clutch slips or grinds when shifting under load
Pull the clutch housing and measure disk wear; traction clutch discs should read 10-6 mm (0.395-0.235 in.) per the spec chart on page 276. Replace any disc below minimum thickness and torque the housing-to-engine cap screws to 318 Nm (235 lb-ft) before reassembly.
Manual Section: Clutch Assembly p. 276Engine overheating or losing power during heavy pulling, coolant temp climbs fast under load
Shut off the engine and let it cool per the safety notice on page 48, then check coolant level; system capacity is 10.8 L (11.4 U.S. qt.) on page 58. Remove the radiator per the engine service procedures starting , flush blocked fins, and pressure test the cap before refilling.
Manual Section: Cooling System p. 58Starter cranks slowly or won't engage, alternator warning light stays on after startup
Check battery terminals and ground straps for corrosion in the electrical repair section starting page 195. Test alternator output at idle; if the starter cranks slowly, load-test the battery first. When remounting the alternator bracket, torque the M8 Grade 7 mounting screws to 20.3-27.1 N.m (15-20 lb-ft) per page 75 before restarting.
Manual Section: Battery, Starter and Alternator p. 195Steering feels heavy or wanders at low RPM, hydraulic steering response delayed on turns
Check steering pump output flow against the spec table on page 56; it should deliver 24.9 L/min (6.6 gpm) at rated engine speed. If flow is low, disassemble and inspect the steering valve in the steering repair section starting page 479 for worn spool bores or damaged seals.
