Part of the John Deere Repair Manuals.
Service work on the X110, X120 and X140 tractors is settled in one place: TM2373, the 276-page John Deere X110 technical manual PDF, covering the single-cylinder and V-Twin engines plus the electrical, hydrostatic drive, steering, brake and mower deck systems. Wiring schematics and harness layouts trace the power, cranking, charging and PTO clutch circuits, and the steering chapter finishes with toe-in adjustment at the front axle. Hydrostatic transaxle and traction drive belt service follows, with troubleshooting charts and theory of operation to back each diagnosis. Fill the V-Twin with 1.9 L (2.0 qt) of oil including the filter, then gap the plugs at 0.76 mm (0.030 in.) and torque them to 20 N•m (180 lb-in.). Your cranking circuit fault gets traced from the schematic. Bookmarks and a searchable text layer take you straight to the park brake test or mower spindle removal, so download your copy now.

John Deere X110, X120, X140 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Battery runs down and charging voltage stays below 13.0 VDC at full throttle
Measure battery terminal voltage at full throttle with PTO off and park brake on; expect 13.0 to 13.5 VDC. If low, check connections to the Y1 starting motor solenoid and X6 connector, then test the regulator/rectifier. Unplug the stator and compare AC output to your model's value on page 154; replace the stator if low.
Manual Section: Electrical Charging Circuit Diagnosis p. 154Electric PTO clutch will not engage when the PTO switch is turned on
Check for battery voltage at the Y3 PTO clutch 501 Yel wire on the X140; if absent, trace the 501 Yel wire. Test continuity from the clutch connector 110 Blk wire to ground and inspect the 110 and 125 Blk wires and W4 negative jumper harness. Then check voltage at the S2 PTO switch 501 Yel wire, following page 156.
Manual Section: Electrical PTO Clutch Circuit Diagnosis p. 156Mower blades keep spinning longer than 5 seconds after the mower is turned off
Disconnect the spark plug wire(s) and wear gloves before working near the blades (page 250). Check the spindle brake measurement and adjust it following page 252; blades must stop within 5 seconds. Recheck it every 25 hours or once a year, and correct spindle brake engagement every time you adjust mower belt tension.
Manual Section: Attachments p. 252Frequently Asked Questions
What are the torque specifications for the mower-blade bolt on a John Deere X110, X120, or X140?
The torque specification for the mower blade nut depends on the size of the nut. For a 107 cm (42-inch) or 122 cm (48-inch) deck, the blade nut torque for an M12 nut is 75 N•m (55 lb-ft), and for a 5/8 inch nut, it is 88 N•m (65 lb-ft). p. 239
How do you fix john Deere X110 X120 X140 engine will not crank and starter solenoid does not click at key start?
Check battery cables for tightness and corrosion, then charge and test the battery; replace it if it will not hold a charge. It must crank the engine at 350 rpm minimum. If the solenoid stays silent, run the cranking circuit diagnosis on page 145, then test the key switch and starting motor solenoid. Keep hands off moving parts while testing; the engine may rotate at any time (page 26). p. 26
How do you fix V-twin engine with suspect fuel cranks over fine but will not fire or start?
Check the air cleaner, fuel mixture, and fuel for contamination, then inspect for a stuck float needle. Check the fuel shutoff valve, fuel lines, fuel pump, and engine vacuum. Around fuel, do not smoke or work near heaters or other fire hazards (page 5). Adjust the choke and throttle cables if not adjusted properly. Verify the fuel shutoff solenoid opens with the key in start/run, following the chart on page 70. p. 70
How do you fix ignition tester shows incorrect or no spark output at the spark plugs?
Inspect the spark plugs and replace any in poor condition. Set gap to 0.76 mm (0.030 in.) and torque to 20 N•m (180 lb-in.) per page 23. Never crank with a plug removed; fuel spray can ignite (page 26). Check magneto to flywheel air gaps. Disconnect the S3 brake switch and check continuity from the 945 Wht/Blk wire to ground, then test seat and S2 PTO switch circuits following page 151. p. 150
