Part of the John Deere Repair Manuals.
TM1537 is the diagnostic half of the John Deere 710D backhoe loader library: 1044 pages, seven sections numbered 9000 to 9031, issued 26 FEB 02 with earlier editions from 1993, 1997 and 1998. This is the Operation and Test manual, so it carries what you need before you buy a single part: the full operational checkout procedure, theory of operation for engine, power train, hydraulics, electrical and cab climate, symptom-based diagnostic charts, adjustments, and pressure and stall tests with real specifications. The electrical section prints functional schematics with wire numbers and colours, and the hydraulic schematic is colour keyed. Teardown is not here - remove and install, disassembly and assembly live in the separate 710D Repair manual.

John Deere 710D Common Problems This Manual Covers
Backhoe and loader functions slow, weak or unresponsive
Run the Operational Checkout Procedure first to confirm which circuits are down, then follow the Hydraulic System diagnostic charts. Pressure tests with specifications separate a restricted filter from low charge pressure or a worn pump before you order anything.
Manual Section: Hydraulic System / Diagnostic Information p. 950Engine cranks but will not start or starts hard
The Engine section's diagnostic charts work the fuel side by symptom: supply, water in fuel, plugged filters, air in the system. Theory of operation and tests confirm the cause, and remember the procedure differs by engine, 6059T up to S.N. 830204, 6068T after.
Manual Section: Engine / System Diagnostic Information p. 125Hydraulic oil overheating
The Hydraulic System section runs overheating down by symptom: oil condition, cooler restriction, or a relief valve set wrong and dumping over relief. Take the relief pressure test against specification before condemning the cooler - a low setting cooks oil while everything else looks fine.
Manual Section: Hydraulic System / Adjustments p. 509Transmission will not shift or slips
The Power Train section carries clutch pressure tests with specifications, plus theory of operation and diagnostic charts. Measuring each clutch pressure against spec tells you whether you are looking at an adjustment, a pressure problem or worn clutches before the transmission ever comes out.
Manual Section: Power Train / System Diagnostic Information p. 547Frequently Asked Questions
My 710D digs weak and slow. Will this manual tell me if it is the pump, the filter or a relief valve before I spend money?
That is exactly what it is for. Start with the Operational Checkout Procedure to bracket the fault, then move to the Hydraulic System section: diagnostic charts by symptom, then pressure tests with specifications so you measure charge pressure and relief settings instead of guessing. The colour-keyed hydraulic schematic shows you where every circuit runs. You replace the part the numbers condemn, not the one the forum guessed. p. 87
Which engine does this cover? I have heard the 710D came with two different diesels.
Both, split by serial number. Machines up to S.N. 830204 run the John Deere 6059T turbocharged diesel, 5.884 L (359 cu in.), net SAE 86 kW (115 hp) at 2200 rpm. From S.N. 830205 and up it is the 6068T / PowerTech 6068T, model 6068TT050, 6.8 L (414 cu in.), net SAE 87 kW (116 hp) at 2200 rpm. The Engine section carries theory of operation, diagnostics, adjustments and tests, so check your serial plate first and work from the right column. p. 24
Does it include wiring diagrams good enough to actually trace a circuit?
Yes. The Electrical System section carries full system functional schematics with wire numbers and wire colours, plus sub-system diagnostics that walk one circuit at a time. That matters on a machine of this age, where half the electrical complaints come down to a corroded connector or a chafed harness you can only find by tracing the wire by its number and colour. p. 200
Are engine and transmission removal or rebuild procedures in this manual?
No, and it is worth being straight about that. TM1537 is the Operation and Test manual: checkout, theory, diagnostics, adjustments, pressure and stall tests. Remove and install, disassembly and assembly are in the separate 710D Repair manual. Buy this one to find out which component failed; buy the repair book when you are ready to open it up. Most jobs need the diagnosis first. p. 7
Can I pull fault codes on a 710D?
No. This machine predates code displays, and the manual reflects that: everything is diagnosed by symptom and by test. You run the operational checkout, follow the symptom to a chart, then confirm with a gauge - clutch pressures, hydraulic pressures, stall speeds against printed specifications. Honestly, for a shop mechanic that is often faster than chasing codes, because the test result points at hardware directly. p. 125
