Covering the 8000 Series grain drills across six configurations (8100, 8200, 8250, 8300, 8350 and the base 8000), John Deere technical manual TM1131 runs 62 pages of drill-specific repair work you can actually follow at the bench. Diagnosis sits up front, walking opener disks, fluted-feed shifters, feed gates and both seed and fertilizer distribution before a single bolt comes loose. Drive work takes up the bulk of the book: fluted-feed and double-run-feed setups, plain grain and grain-with-fertilizer, each carried through drive shaft bearings, drive tube and sprocket, clutch, countershaft and gear case, with exploded views showing how the stack goes back together. Torque the single-disk opener blade to the drawbar at 105 ft-lbs (142 N-m), and replace any wear washer measuring under 0.044 inches (1.1 mm). Nobody is standing beside you at 9 p.m. with seed still to go. Bookmarked and text-searchable, your copy prints clean for the shop, so grease on the corners costs you nothing.

John Deere 8000–8350 Common Problems This Manual Covers

John Deere 8300 grain drill openers skip seed and ride over residue in no-till ground

Pull the drill onto level ground and check each opener disk for wear, wobble, and loose boot hardware using the procedures on page 48. Replace thin blades and worn bushings, then torque single disk blade to drawbar hardware to 105 ft-lbs (142 N-m) per the chart on page 60.

Manual Section: Furrow Openers p. 48
Seed drops unevenly between runs, heavy bunching in some rows and light stand in others

Run the drill up on jacks and turn the drive wheel by hand while watching each feed cup for bunching, following the checks on page 7. Reset any cup sitting out of line with the group as shown on page 44, then torque the feed shaft lock nut to 100-125 ft-lbs (136-169 N-m).

Manual Section: Feed Cups p. 44
Feed shaft and drive turn hard or seize completely after sitting through winter storage

Soak the feed shaft bearings and chains with penetrating oil and work the shaft loose by hand before forcing anything. Pull the drive tube and measure the wear washer: replace it once thickness falls under 0.044 inches (1.1 mm), covered on page 35. Grease every fitting before the drill goes back to the field.

Manual Section: Plain Grain Double-Run-Feed Drive p. 35
Drive chain jumps sprockets on the end wheel and the acremeter quits counting

Check end wheel tire pressure first: 28 psi on 4-ply tires, 32 psi on 6-ply. Pull the axle plate using the procedure on page 9, inspect the drive chain, bearings, and seals for wear, replace flattened rollers, and torque the axle nut to 60 ft-lbs (81 N-m) on reassembly.

Manual Section: End Wheels p. 9
Fertilizer rate falls off across the field and oil weeps from the gear case

Drain and refill the fertilizer gear case to its 1 qt. (0.95 L) capacity, listed on page 6, and replace the shaft seals if oil keeps weeping. Inspect the countershaft bearings and fertilizer feed shaft bearing on page 25, then clean caked fertilizer from the feed cups before the next pass.

Manual Section: Grain and Fertilizer Fluted-Feed Drive p. 25
