Part of the John Deere Repair Manuals.
This is the factory repair manual for the John Deere 9R and 9RX series: 9370R, 9420R, 9470R, 9520R, 9570R and 9620R wheeled tractors, plus the 9470RX, 9520RX, 9570RX and 9620RX four-track machines. It walks through actual teardown and reassembly: powershift transmission removal and in-tractor repair, single and double reduction axles, final drives and brakes, the PTO clutch and drop box, hydraulic pumps and selective control valves, steering, the hinge and gudgeon on the articulation joint, HydraCushion suspension, cab and CommandARM electrical. These are Final Tier 4 tractors, so DEF system service is in here too, along with full torque charts for hydraulic fittings and dealer-fabricated special tool drawings.

John Deere 9R/9RX Series Common Problems This Manual Covers
Vibration or a knock from the front of the engine caused by a worn torsional damper, common on high-hour units under heavy drawbar load.
The Engine section includes a dedicated Replace Torsional Damper procedure covering removal, inspection and installation, so you can cure the vibration without guessing at the crank nose or sending the tractor to the dealer.
Manual Section: Section 20 - Engine, Group 05: Engine Repair p. 127DEF and aftertreatment warning lights pulling engine power back during planting or harvest, often traced to a restricted dosing unit filter or contaminated DEF.
The General Information section covers the DEF system, correct DEF concentration of 31.8% to 33.2%, and dosing unit filter service with the 23 N·m (204 lb.-in.) cover torque, so you replace the filter right the first time.
Manual Section: Section 10 - General Information, Group 05B p. 75Overheating in heavy tillage after seasons of chaff packing the cooling stack, or a lazy thermostat that never quite brings temperature under control.
The Radiator and Coolers group walks through cooler removal, cleaning and reinstallation, and the thermostat service includes the cover cap screw torque of 48 N·m (35 lb.-ft.) on the 9.0 L engine, so the system goes back together sealed.
Manual Section: Section 30 - Fuel, Air Intake, Exhaust, And Cooling, Group 20: Radiator And Coolers p. 239Hydraulic fittings weeping or blowing out on the SCV stack and hitch circuits, usually because someone guessed at the torque or reused a crushed seal.
The hydraulic fitting torque charts and the Install Hydraulic Fittings procedure give exact torque by fitting size and pressure range, covering standard fittings on systems below 27.6 MPa (4,000 PSI), which ends the tighten-until-it-stops-leaking cycle.
Manual Section: Section 10 - General Information, Group 05B p. 64Frequently Asked Questions
Does one manual really cover both the wheeled 9R and the four-track 9RX?
Yes. The axle, final drive and brake sections cover both single and double reduction configurations, and the 9RX-specific running gear is addressed alongside the wheeled machines. Shared systems like the PST transmission, hydraulics, hinge and gudgeon, and cab apply across all ten models. p. 9
My tractor is derating power with DEF warnings. Will this manual fix that?
It covers the hands-on side: DEF system layout, tank service and the dosing unit filter, including the filter cover torque of 23 N·m (204 lb.-in.). Be straight with yourself though: this book does not print a fault code list. It explains the warning indicators and points you to the diagnostic procedure through a dealer or diagnostic tool. For turning wrenches on the aftertreatment hardware, it is what you need. p. 72
Can I rebuild the engine or injection pump with this book?
No, and it is better you know before buying. The manual covers engine removal and installation, torsional damper replacement and everything bolted to the engine, but internal engine and fuel system repair are referred to a separate Component Technical Manual (CTM). If your job is pulling the engine or chasing a vibration, you are covered. If you are splitting the block, you also need the CTM. p. 47
Are torque specs and hydraulic fitting charts included?
Yes. The General Information section has torque value tables, sealant applications and full hydraulic fitting torque charts, including specs for standard fittings on systems below 27.6 MPa (4,000 PSI). On a tractor with this much plumbing, those charts alone save you from re-doing leaky joints twice. p. 50
Does it cover powershift transmission work without splitting the tractor?
The Powershift Transmission section covers both full component removal and installation and in-tractor repair, plus complete transmission assembly. So for jobs where the trans can stay in the frame, the procedures are there, and when it has to come out, the removal sequence is documented step by step. p. 682
