TM1597 is the number printed on the cover, and it is the same technical manual John Deere issued to dealer service benches for the F735 front mower and the Yanmar 2V78 diesel bolted into it. The full 381-page book comes as a PDF download, from the torque tables at the front to the mower deck gear case at the back.

It is Saturday, the deck is off, and there is nobody around who has had one of these apart. This book answers instead: compression figures and valve clearance in the Diesel Engine section, cranking, run, charge and PTO circuits drawn out in the Electrical section, neutral adjustment and drive belt work under Hydrostatic Power Train, and deck leveling, spindle repair and blade sharpening in Attachments.

Print only the pages you need, let them get oily on the bench beside the machine, and get the mower cutting again this season.

John Deere F735 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Engine hunts and surges at full throttle

F735 owners report the engine surging while mowing even with the throttle held wide open, which usually points at governor linkage, fuel delivery, or idle settings that have drifted over the years. The Diesel Engine section gives slow idle at 1500 ± 50 rpm and fast idle at 3200 ± 50 rpm, so you can confirm where the engine actually sits before touching the linkage.

Manual Section: Diesel Engine p. 28
Hard starting, smoke, and weak power

A diesel that cranks forever and then runs soft is usually telling you about compression or injection, not the battery. The Diesel Engine section walks the cylinder compression test: standard compression of 3040 ± 196 kPa (441 ± 29 psi), no more than 294 kPa (43 psi) difference between cylinders, taken at a minimum cranking speed of 250 rpm.

Manual Section: Diesel Engine p. 39
Blades will not engage or clutch slips

The electric PTO clutch wears until its air gap opens too far to pull in cleanly, and the blades either refuse to start or drop out under load. The Electrical section covers the PTO circuit and specifies a clutch air gap of 0.38-0.64 mm (0.015-0.025 in.), which tells you whether to adjust the clutch or chase the circuit.

Manual Section: Electrical p. 98
Machine creeps in neutral or loses drive

A hydrostatic mower that inches forward with the pedal released, or that goes soft on hills, needs the neutral adjustment checked before anyone talks about a transaxle rebuild. The Hydrostatic Power Train section covers transmission operation, troubleshooting, neutral adjustment, differential lock, and drive belt repair.

Manual Section: Hydrostatic Power Train p. 198
Steering turns heavy or wanders

Slow, heavy steering on a front mower is often internal leakage rather than a worn linkage. The Steering section includes the leakage test, toe-in adjustment, and steering valve repair, and gives a steering valve relief opening pressure of 5247 kPa (761 psi) to test against.

Manual Section: Steering p. 253
Deck scalps and cuts unevenly

Stepped or wavy cut usually traces back to deck level, a tired spindle bearing, or a belt that no longer holds tension. The Attachments section starts with mower deck troubleshooting and takes you through leveling and spindle repair rather than leaving you to eyeball it in the driveway.

Manual Section: Attachments p. 310
Ragged cut from badly sharpened blades

Grass that looks torn and browns off at the tips is often blades ground to a knife edge or left too blunt to slice. The Attachments section covers blade sharpening and calls for a cutting edge of 0.40 mm (0.016 in.), which is the difference between a clean cut and a chewed lawn.

Manual Section: Attachments p. 321

Frequently Asked Questions

Which machine does this manual cover?

TM1597 is the John Deere technical manual for the F735 front mower and the Yanmar 2V78 diesel engine fitted to it. It is a single-model book, so the procedures, schematics and specifications apply directly to the F735 instead of being spread across a whole product range.

Does it include wiring diagrams?

Yes. The Electrical section begins at page 96 and covers electrical schematics, wiring harnesses, and the cranking, run, charge and PTO circuits. That is what you need to chase a no-start or a dead clutch by testing rather than by swapping parts. p. 96

Does the John Deere F735 manual cover the 48-, 54- and 60-inch mower decks?

The Specifications section lists the 122 cm (48 in.), 137 cm (54 in.) and 152 cm (60 in.) decks, each with a cutting height range of 25-100 mm (1-4 in.). Deck leveling, blade sharpening, spindle repair and gear case repair are all handled in the Attachments section. p. 10

What engine specifications does the John Deere F735 manual give for the Yanmar 2V78 diesel?

The Diesel Engine section lists slow idle at 1500 ± 50 rpm, fast idle at 3200 ± 50 rpm, and engine oil pressure of 241 kPa (35 psi) at 3200 rpm, alongside cylinder compression testing and valve clearance adjustment procedures. p. 28

Is this John Deere F735 manual a download or a disc?

This is a 381-page searchable PDF ready for immediate download. Works on any device, so pull it up on your phone while you're under the hood. No shipping, no waiting.

Am I free to print this John Deere F735 Technical Manual?

You can. The PDF is unlocked and carries no copy protection, so print the sections you want and keep the file as your backup.

Can I find hydraulic circuit diagrams in this John Deere F735 manual?

Yes. The Hydraulics section includes a hydraulic schematic on page 293, and the Hydrostatic Power Train section has oil-flow diagrams such as page 208. p. 293
