This is the factory John Deere Technical Manual for one machine, the JD302-A Loader and Backhoe Loader, OEM TM-1090, 558 pages running from basic engine work through the 9250 backhoe control valve. Factory wiring diagrams cover the charging, starting, and ignition circuits. Hydraulic schematics trace fluid from the main pump through the loader, steering, brake, and backhoe valves. A full System Testing section handles engine, electrical, power train, and hydraulic faults. Torque the wheel retainers to 100 lb-ft, set pump shaft end play between 0.002 and 0.006 inch, and pull the rocker arm shaft clamp screws to 55 lb-ft (75 Nm). Forum threads won't rebuild your reverser. Bookmarked by system and text-searchable: type the spec, find the number, put a wrench on it.

John Deere JD302-A Common Problems This Manual Covers

John Deere JD302-A loader moves slowly, lacks lifting power, bucket will not lift a heavy load

Check transmission and hydraulic oil level first; the system holds 10 gallons (37.9 L). Test main pump standby pressure with an analyzer; if it reads outside 2300 to 2400 psi on page 246, adjust the stroke control valve screw. If pressure is correct, run the Circuit Leakage Test on page 516 to isolate leakage in the loader control valve.

Manual Section: Hydraulic System p. 246
Loader boom settles down from raised position with engine running or shut off

Raise the boom, shut off the engine, and watch for drift; that isolates internal cylinder leakage. Repack leaking boom cylinders with new seals, then tighten the lock nut to 150-250 lb-ft (21-35 kg/m) per page 331. If cylinders test tight, inspect the loader control valve and selective control valve for internal leakage; the symptom chart on page 505 routes both to the Circuit Leakage Test.

Manual Section: Hydraulic System p. 331
Loader moves opposite to control lever after hose replacement or attachment swap

Trace each hose from the loader control valve to its cylinder port before condemning the valve. Reversed connections at the quick-connect couplers flip lever response. Reconnect the hoses in correct order, cycle each function slowly, and verify system relief pressure does not exceed the 2350 psi (16 203 kPa) maximum before returning to work.

Manual Section: Hydraulic System p. 11
Hydraulic oil overheats and functions get sluggish after an hour of digging

Drain and refill with clean fluid if the oil is dark or smells burnt; capacity is 10 gallons (37.9 L). Clean the oil cooler grille and tank strainer. Inspect the transmission-hydraulic filter relief valve spring on page 319; replace it if free length is under 2.56 in. (65.02 mm), since a weak spring bypasses dirty oil past the filter.

Manual Section: Hydraulic System p. 319
Oil leaks at loader fittings, couplers, and cylinder rods leave puddles under the machine

Wipe everything clean, run the loader, and find the wet spot before pulling parts. Replace O-rings on plug-in fittings and worn coupler seals. For leaking bucket cylinder rod seals, install a new seal kit, then torque the rod guide to 250-300 lb-ft (35-41 kg/m) and the stop nut to 150-250 lb-ft per page 330.
