John Deere JD310 loader hydraulics slow and jerky under load, boom lifts weak, pressure drops when warm

Check reservoir oil level and change the hydraulic filter first; cold or dirty oil causes jerky operation. Trace the pressure loss with the hydraulic schematic, then test the pump. Measure pump shaft end play; anything outside 0.001 to 0.003 in. means the pump needs a rebuild, specs are on page 228.

Check transmission oil level and filter before condemning hardware. If flow is still dead after warm-up, pull the transmission supply pump and inspect the gears; idler gear thickness must measure 0.5085 to 0.5095 in. per page 135. While the pump is out, verify drive shaft end play sits at 0.004 to 0.006 in.

Drain the sediment bowl and replace the fuel filter, then bleed air from the lines back to the injection pump. Check the tank for water contamination and inspect the injection nozzles for plugging. Work through the fuel system diagnosis starting on page 71. Once running, confirm the diesel settles into a slow idle of 800 rpm.

Inspect rod-end fittings for external leaks first, then test for internal bypass: raise the boom, shut the engine off, and time the drift. Reseal the leaking cylinder with new packings and rod wiper. On reassembly, torque the boom cylinder piston stop nut to 475 to 575 ft-lbs per the chart on page 279.

Check hydraulic oil level and top up before anything else; low oil recirculates too fast and cooks. Clean debris out of the oil cooler fins and replace a plugged transmission filter.
