John Deere JD310 Common Problems This Manual Covers
John Deere JD310 loader hydraulics slow and jerky under load, boom lifts weak, pressure drops when warm
Check reservoir oil level and change the hydraulic filter first; cold or dirty oil causes jerky operation. Trace the pressure loss with the hydraulic schematic, then test the pump. Measure pump shaft end play; anything outside 0.001 to 0.003 in. means the pump needs a rebuild, specs are on page 228.
Manual Section: Hydraulic System Malfunctions p. 195Machine won't shift into gear after start-up, brakes won't release, no transmission hydraulic flow
Check transmission oil level and filter before condemning hardware. If flow is still dead after warm-up, pull the transmission supply pump and inspect the gears; idler gear thickness must measure 0.5085 to 0.5095 in. per page 135. While the pump is out, verify drive shaft end play sits at 0.004 to 0.006 in.
Manual Section: Power Train System Malfunctions p. 115Diesel engine cranks strong but won't start, or fires briefly then stalls
Drain the sediment bowl and replace the fuel filter, then bleed air from the lines back to the injection pump. Check the tank for water contamination and inspect the injection nozzles for plugging. Work through the fuel system diagnosis starting on page 71. Once running, confirm the diesel settles into a slow idle of 800 rpm.
Manual Section: Fuel System Malfunctions p. 71Backhoe boom drifts down overnight, bucket won't hold position under load
Inspect rod-end fittings for external leaks first, then test for internal bypass: raise the boom, shut the engine off, and time the drift. Reseal the leaking cylinder with new packings and rod wiper. On reassembly, torque the boom cylinder piston stop nut to 475 to 575 ft-lbs per the chart on page 279.
Manual Section: Hydraulic System Malfunctions p. 195Hydraulic oil overheats after an hour of digging, whole system slows down
Check hydraulic oil level and top up before anything else; low oil recirculates too fast and cooks. Clean debris out of the oil cooler fins and replace a plugged transmission filter. Verify oil viscosity matches the season. If heat persists, follow the diagnosis in the hydraulic system section beginning on page 195 and test pump output.
Manual Section: Hydraulic System Malfunctions p. 195Frequently Asked Questions
What are the torque specifications for the engine head bolts on a John Deere 310 backhoe?
The cylinder head cap screws should be tightened to 95 ft-lbs in the sequence shown in Figure 2 on page 37. p. 37
What are the replacement specifications for hydraulic filters on the JD310?
The hydraulic return oil filter uses a filter element (16) and packing (17). When installing a new element, ensure the filter cover packing is seated properly in the oil filter relief valve housing. p. 235
What are the replacement specifications for fuel filters on the JD310?
The diesel engine uses either a single-stage fuel filter with a sediment bowl or a dual-stage fuel filter with sediment bowls. Refer to the Operator's Manual for specific filter replacement information. p. 74
What is the correct valve clearance for the diesel engine on the JD310?
For the diesel engine, the intake valve clearance is 0.014 inch and the exhaust valve clearance is 0.018 inch. p. 16
What is the engine oil capacity for the JD310?
The engine crankcase capacity is 7 U.S. quarts for early units and 9 U.S. quarts for later units, including the filter. p. 19
