Part of the John Deere Repair Manuals.
What a John Deere JD555 crawler loader should measure, from track sag to axle shaft end play, is settled by one book: the John Deere JD555 technical manual PDF, TM-1111, running 687 pages. Section 90 System Testing takes up nearly a fifth of it and works through engine, electrical, hydraulic, power train and winch diagnosis in order, while wiring diagrams trace the charging circuit and harness and hydraulic schematics map oil routing through the backhoe and test circuits. Teardown coverage runs from rollers and idler springs through the torque converter, power shift clutch, engine and winch drive, then on to loader frames, buckets and loader hydraulics. Set track sag at 7/8 to 1-1/8 inch (22 to 29 mm) and hold axle shaft end play to 0.001 to 0.005 inch (0.03 to 0.13 mm). A bearing job stalls on one missing clearance. Buy this bookmarked, text-searchable PDF once and you keep it for the life of your JD555.

John Deere JD555 Common Problems This Manual Covers
John Deere JD555 crawler loader transmission clutch slippage with slow or erratic clutch engagement
Check transmission oil level and correct it, then look for foamed oil and external leakage. Test forward pack pressure following page 627: with the steering clutch released, shift to forward and expect 60 to 110 psi rising to 250 to 280 psi. If pressure is low, pull and clean the sump oil screen, then inspect the main regulator relief valve and sequence spools.
Manual Section: Transmission Troubleshooting p. 620Loader hydraulic functions lift slowly with the oil warm and the engine throttle open
Check the suction line for air leaks or restriction, and tighten or replace it. Replace or clean a dirty oil filter, and clean or replace the system relief valve if it is dirty or leaking. Relieve all hydraulic pressure before disconnecting any line, as page 468 requires. If lift speed stays slow, test the pump against specifications and check cylinder packings and the control valve for leakage.
Manual Section: Hydraulic System Troubleshooting p. 618Loader hydraulic functions fail to stay raised and the boom settles with the levers released
Verify the boom is supported with the safety lock bar before working underneath it, as page 467 requires. Inspect lines and fittings from the control valve to the cylinder for leaks, never with your hands (page 13), then tighten or replace them. Relieve all pressure before disconnecting lines (page 468). If the lines are tight, repair or replace leaking valve spools or replace worn cylinder seal parts.
Manual Section: Hydraulic System Troubleshooting p. 618Main hydraulic system pressure reads low when testing the loader circuit against specification
Measure system pressure against the 2,250 psi (158.2 kg/cm²) hydraulic pump rating listed on page 15. If it reads low, suspect the relief valve ball being held open by foreign material or a broken valve spring, which lets oil return to the reservoir. Relieve all pressure before disconnecting any lines (page 468), then clean or replace the relief valve.
Manual Section: Hydraulic System Troubleshooting p. 619Crawler track running loose or too tight with sag outside the adjustment range
Measure track sag and set it to 7/8 to 1-1/8 inch (22 to 29 mm) following page 36. Never use a grease gun rated higher than 8,000 psi, and tee a 0 to 10,000 psi gauge into the gun tube to check pressure. Lubricate the hydraulic track adjusting cylinder fitting only when the track needs adjustment (page 51).
Manual Section: General Information p. 36Starting motor does not operate when the start switch is pressed with the key on
Test with a voltmeter at the solenoid S terminal and a good ground: turn the key on with the unit in neutral and press the start switch. Battery voltage there points to the starting motor or solenoid switch. If there is no voltage, check the key switch, neutral start switch adjustment, starting circuit relay and battery-to-solenoid wiring, following page 577. Keep metal tools off the battery top and keep sparks away (page 345).
Manual Section: Electrical System Troubleshooting p. 577Frequently Asked Questions
How do I diagnose loss of drive on one side of a John Deere JD555?
To diagnose loss of drive, first determine if the crawler can be moved to ensure tracks or final drives are not locked. If the crawler is free to move, shift through different ranges and listen for clutch and gear changes. If gear changes are heard, the problem is in the bevel gear set or steering clutches; if no gear shifts are heard, pull the power shift housing assembly for further inspection. p. 597
How do I test the steering-clutch pressure on a John Deere JD555?
Steering clutch pressure is tested at the clutch pack test points (6 through 10, Fig. 14, page 625). When engaged, these test points should read 250 to 280 psi (18 to 20 kg/cm²). p. 625
How do I access the right steering clutch on a John Deere JD555?
To access the steering clutch, you must first remove the track assembly and drive sprocket as directed in Group 0130. Then, remove the rear tank unit, steering clutch housing cover, and the steering clutch drive shaft by pulling it through the drive axle housing. Finally, lift the steering clutch assembly from the case. p. 111
What transmission, hydraulic, or steering-clutch oil does a JD555 use?
For the transmission, hydraulic system, final drives, and winch, use John Deere Hydraulic Oil (J14C) or an equivalent in all weather conditions. p. 58
What is the correct torque for the cylinder head cap screws on the JD555 engine?
The cylinder head cap screws should be tightened evenly to 95 lb-ft (13 kg-m) following the sequence shown in Figure 4 on page 210. p. 210
