Working on a John Deere walk-behind? This 146-page John Deere JS60 Technical Manual PDF (OEM TM1710) covers the JS60, JS60H, JS61, JS63, JS63H, and JS63E walk-behind rotary mowers, with dedicated sections for both the Intek and Quantum engines. You get full diagnosis, tests and adjustments, and step-by-step repair procedures for each engine, plus a power train section on the traction drive, drive belt, transaxle removal, and clutch cable. Metric and inch fastener torque tables sit up front; blade assembly, wheel removal, and front axle replacement round out the back. Gap the Intek's spark plug at 0.51 mm, torque the flywheel nut to 81 N-m, and refill the crankcase with 0.65 L of oil. Your mower is down; forum guesses won't fix it. Bookmarked with a live text layer: search any spec by keyword, jump straight to the section, and get wrenching.

John Deere JS60-JS63 Series Common Problems This Manual Covers
White smoke and oil-soaked air filter after tipping the mower on its side for blade work
Remove the air filter and replace the oil-soaked element; a saturated filter chokes airflow and richens the mixture. Wipe out the airbox, then run the engine at fast idle outdoors until residual oil burns off. Drain and refill the crankcase on Intek engines to 0.65 L, per page 21. Always tip the mower with the spark plug pointing up.
Manual Section: Engine - Intek p. 21Engine shuts off randomly during mowing or won't fire until the bail is cycled several times
Test the brake-kill switch and interlock switch for continuity with a meter while cycling the bail. Adjust or replace a frayed flywheel brake cable; slack here cuts spark intermittently. If the mower struck an object, pull the blower housing and inspect the flywheel key, then torque the flywheel nut to 81 N•m as specified on page 23.
Manual Section: Engine - Intek Repair p. 45Heavy handlebar vibration and ragged uneven cut after the blade struck a root
Remove the blade and lay it on a flat surface to check for bends; replace a bent or cracked blade, never straighten one. Inspect the blade adapter and crankshaft end for damage while the blade is off. Sharpen and balance the blade, then reinstall with the bolt torqued to 75 N•m before returning the mower to service.
Manual Section: Miscellaneous Repair p. 129Frequently Asked Questions
How do I reset the self-propelled cable on a John Deere JS63?
To adjust the transaxle cable on JS63 series mowers, engage the transaxle bail and measure the spring length in the extended position. The cable is properly adjusted when the extended spring length is 10 mm (0.4 in.) greater than the relaxed spring length. If adjustment is needed, loosen the cable mount bracket cap screws and slide the bracket to the right or left. p. 118
What are the replacement specifications for the carburetor?
The carburetor is not adjustable. You must ensure the throttle plate opens fully at the engine operating speed of 3200 ± 100 rpm. If the carburetor is malfunctioning, it must be cleaned or replaced as necessary. p. 43
How do you fix john Deere JS60 cranks but won't start after sitting all winter, dies seconds after priming?
Drain the stale fuel from the tank, then pull the carburetor and drop the float bowl. Clear the main jet with carb cleaner and compressed air; varnish from old gas plugs it solid. Carburetor service for Intek engines starts on page 45. While it's apart, gap the spark plug to 0.51 mm before reassembly. p. 45
How do you fix engine surges at idle, runs rough, and loses power when cutting into thick grass?
Inspect the governor and throttle linkage for binding or a stretched spring, then perform the governor adjustment for your engine. Clean the carburetor idle passages with spray cleaner and compressed air. On Quantum engines, also check valve clearance; intake should measure 0.10 to 0.20 mm, the spec listed on page 70. Recheck idle speed afterward. p. 70
