John Deere 14.542GS, 1642HS, 17.542HS Common Problems This Manual Covers

John Deere 14.542GS will not move forward when traction engaged, drive belt looks loose

Check the shift lever first; N position means no drive no matter the engine speed. Inspect the traction drive belt for glazing, cracks, or a jumped pulley, then work through the troubleshooting table starting on page 174. If the transaxle has shifted on the frame, retorque the front mounting cap screws to 34 N•m (25 lb-ft).

Manual Section: Power Train - Gear p. 174
Engine cranks but will not start, or runs rough and misfires under load

Drain stale fuel and refill with fresh gasoline. Remove the spark plug and inspect for fouling; gap a new plug to 0.76 mm (0.030 in.) and torque it to 26 N•m (240 lb-in.) per the electrical specs on page 117. Verify the plug wire snaps on firmly and check the air filter for clogging.

Manual Section: Electrical p. 117
Mower deck vibrates badly at PTO engagement, cut looks uneven and striped

Torque the blade cap screws to 62 N•m (46 lb-ft) as listed on page 13; loose bolts are the usual vibration source on these decks. Check both blades for bends and matched sharpening, then spin each spindle by hand to feel for bearing roughness. Inspect the deck belt for chunking using the attachments diagnostics starting on page 228.

Manual Section: Attachments p. 13
Hydrostatic drive loses power on slopes with jerky engagement and transaxle whine

Verify the drive belt rides fully in its sheaves and the idler tensioning spring is intact and seated. Clean debris off the fan and hydro housing exterior; trapped heat kills these transaxles. On hydrostatic models, retorque loose transaxle mounting cap screws to 40 N•m (30 lb-ft), the spec on page 188.

Manual Section: Power Train - Hydrostatic p. 186
Engine overheats and loses power partway through mowing wet or tall grass

Shut down and let the engine cool. Clean packed clippings out of the cooling fins and blower housing with compressed air. Drain stale fuel and refill with fresh gasoline. On the 17.5 hp Kohler only, confirm oil pressure holds at least 124 kPa (18 psi) at 1250 rpm, checked per page 64. Slow your ground speed in heavy grass.

Manual Section: Engine - 17.5 Hp Kohler p. 64

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the recommended service intervals?

For the 42-Inch mower deck, the spindle brake measurement should be checked every 25 hours or once a year, whichever comes first. General service and lubricant change intervals are referred to the operator's manual. p. 238

What fluids and capacities does this machine require?

The machine requires specific fluids and capacities depending on the component. For instance, the 14.542GS engine crankcase capacity (without filter) is 1.4 L (1.5 qt), and the fuel tank capacity is 7.9 L (2.1 gal). Recommended lubricants include TURF-GARD® OR PLUS-4® engine oil, John Deere Low Viscosity HY-GARD® (J20D) transmission oil, and John Deere MOLY HIGH TEMPERATURE EP GREASE. p. 10

How to troubleshoot engine won't start?

To troubleshoot an engine that won't start, refer to the Cranking Circuit Diagnosis section. This involves checking battery voltage at the battery posts, starting motor solenoid, and key switch, as well as testing resistance at the negative battery terminal to ground. Detailed test procedures are outlined on pages 130-134. p. 130

What are the valve clearance specifications?

For Briggs & Stratton engines, the intake valve clearance is 0.08 – 0.13 mm (0.003 – 0.005 in.) and the exhaust valve clearance is 0.13 – 0.18 mm (0.005 – 0.007 in.). Kohler 17.5 HP engines, however, use hydraulic lifters and therefore have no specified valve adjustment clearance. p. 24

What torque specifications are listed?

The manual provides extensive torque specifications for various components. For example, Briggs & Stratton engine's Blower Housing Screws should be tightened to 9.6 N•m (85 lb-in.), and Kohler engine's Air Cleaner Base Nut to 10 N•m (89 lb-in.). General metric fastener torque values are also provided in tables on pages 11 and 12. p. 22
