Part of the New Holland Operator Manuals.
Bleeding the fuel system after a filter change is laid out in this New Holland TC35A operator manual PDF, a 120-page book (OEM ID 87300513) that also covers the TC40A and TC45A compact tractors. Electrical schematic diagrams trace the fuse block, alternator and lighting circuits, and separate two-wheel drive and front-wheel drive charts list service intervals for every lubrication point. Operation chapters explain the instrument panel and hydraulic lift. Fit a BCI group 24F battery rated for at least 600 cold cranking amps at -18°C (0°F), and run a 7.5 amp fuse on the glow plug auto heat control. For remounting a front wheel or setting toe-in, your figures are 169 N·m (125 ft. lbs.) on the wheel bolts and 42 to 56 N·m (31 to 41 ft. lbs.) on the tie rod adjusting nut. The bookmarked pages print cleanly as a working copy, so the maintenance chart can sit beside your tractor at each engine oil change.

New Holland TC35A, TC40A, TC45A Common Problems This Manual Covers
New Holland TC35A TC40A TC45A starter motor cranks but engine will not start
Check that the PTO modulation lever is OFF, the forward/reverse shuttle lever is in NEUTRAL, and you are seated or the parking brake is engaged, per page 23. If not, the starter still turns but the fuel solenoid is not energized and blocks fuel to the injection pump. Always start from the operator's seat, never bypass the neutral start switches (page 7), and never crank longer than 30 seconds.
Manual Section: Engine Starting Troubleshooting p. 23Engine running at idle shuts off about two seconds after operator leaves the seat
Verify the parking brake is engaged and the forward/reverse shuttle lever is in NEUTRAL before you stand up. Page 24 explains the engine shuts off in about two seconds if the operator leaves the seat without both set, so this is normal design, not a fault. Never get off the tractor while it is in motion, and do not bypass the neutral start switches (page 7).
Manual Section: Engine Starting Troubleshooting p. 24Diesel engine hard to start cold after turning key to ACC/RUN for pre-heat
Turn the key to ACC/RUN and wait for the cold start indicator light to go out, about 10 seconds, while the glow plugs heat the precombustion chambers (page 23). Do not use ether with the glow plug starting aid, as page 23 warns. If pre-heat seems dead, check the glow plug auto heat control fuse on the fuse block against its 7.5 amp rating on page 71.
Manual Section: Engine Starting Troubleshooting p. 23Fuel sediment bowl slow to fill and engine needs long cranking after running out of fuel
Check the return vent lines for a blockage, which page 58 gives as the cause of a slow-filling sediment bowl. Make sure the tank has fuel, open the fuel shutoff valve, then open the bleed screw at the pump until air-free fuel flows and close it (page 59). Injection system fuel is under high pressure; search for leaks with cardboard or paper, never your hand (page 54).
Manual Section: Fuel System Bleeding p. 58Engine temperature running too hot with fan belt slipping on the pulleys
Check belt deflection by pressing midway between the pulleys with 9-11 kg of thumb pressure; a correct belt deflects 10 mm-15 mm (page 66). With the engine stopped, loosen the alternator mounting bolts, pry the alternator away from the engine, tighten, and recheck. Never loosen or tighten those bolts with the engine running. Replace a cracked or frayed belt and keep radiator fins clear of chaff (page 64).
Manual Section: Fan Belt Adjustment p. 66Battery charge warning light comes on with engine running and alternator not charging
Check the fan belt first, since page 70 notes belt slippage affects the 40 amp alternator's charging; adjust it per page 66 with the engine stopped. Inspect the alternator terminals to make sure they are clean and tight, and clean the alternator cooling fan. Never disconnect the alternator output lead or battery cables while the alternator is operating, and never short the field terminal to ground.
Manual Section: Electrical System Troubleshooting p. 70Frequently Asked Questions
Why will the tractor not start or crank?
The engine will not start if the PTO modulation lever is not in the 'OFF' position, the shuttle lever is not in 'NEUTRAL', or if the operator is not in the seat while the parking brake is disengaged. Without an operator in the seat, the fuel solenoid is not energized, blocking fuel flow to the injection pump. p. 23
What are the replacement specs for the fuel filter and fuel-system seals on the New Holland TC35A, TC40A, TC45A?
When changing the fuel filter, you must replace the O-rings (part numbers 4 and 5 in the diagram) and the element (part number 3). The fuel filter should be drained after every 100 hours of operation. p. 57
What is the capacity of the transmission, rear axle, and hydraulic system oil on the New Holland TC35A, TC40A, TC45A?
The common sump for the transmission, rear axle, and hydraulic system has a capacity of 35.2 liters (9.3 U.S. gallons) for the 12 x 12 transmission. p. 62
What is the correct torque for the ROPS mounting bolts on the New Holland TC35A, TC40A, TC45A?
The ROPS mounting bolts must be tightened to a torque of 74.5 N⋅m (55 ft. lbs.). This should be inspected after the first 20 hours of operation and then every 500 hours or every six months. p. 67
How do I adjust the fan belt tension?
To adjust the fan belt, loosen the alternator mounting bolts, pry the alternator away from the engine to achieve the correct tension, and then tighten the bolts. A correctly tightened belt will deflect 10 mm-15 mm (7/16"-9/16") when 9-11 kg (20-25 lbs.) of pressure is applied. WARNING: Never attempt to loosen or tighten mounting bolts with the engine running. p. 66
