If your tractor is a John Deere 2020, this is the coverage that fits: TM1044, the factory John Deere 2020 technical manual PDF, 260 pages spanning gasoline and diesel engines, collar shift transmission, Hi-Lo, reverser, and both continuous and independent PTO. Wiring diagrams trace the charging, starting, ignition, and lighting circuits, while hydraulic schematics map the rockshaft, steering, and selective control valve circuits through diagnosis and testing. The hydraulic section alone fills roughly a quarter of the book. Set the distributor point gap between 0.018 and 0.022 inch, and pull rear hub bolts to 300 ft-lb before a wheel works loose in the field. A guessed torque on a flanged axle costs you a second teardown; the spec costs nothing to look up. Download the bookmarked PDF, print the section for the job, and let those pages take the grease on the bench while the master copy stays clean.

John Deere 2020 Common Problems This Manual Covers

John Deere 2020 gas engine cranks strong but will not start, only fires with choke pulled full

Check the sediment bowl and strainer for water and rust before touching the carburetor. Drain the bowl, clean the screen, and confirm fuel flows freely to the carb. Then set the point gap to 0.020 in. per the tune-up specs on page 14 and gap the plugs to 0.025 inch.

Manual Section: Fuel System Diagnosis p. 71
Hydraulic pump squeals and shudders when cold, rockshaft lifts slow and steering whines

Check transmission-hydraulic fluid level first; a squeal on cold mornings usually means the pump is sucking air through a low reservoir or a plugged intake screen. Drain, clean the screens, and change the filter. Then gauge the system: standby pressure should read 2250 psi per the spec on page 6.

Manual Section: Hydraulic System Diagnosis p. 189
PTO shaft keeps spinning with clutch pedal all the way down, baler will not stop

Adjust the clutch linkage free play first; a dragging PTO clutch is often linkage worn out of adjustment, not a failed pack. Follow the clutch procedures in the Power Train section starting on page 119. On independent PTO tractors, verify the transmission pump delivers 6 gpm at 2500 rpm before splitting the tractor.

Manual Section: Power Train p. 119
Starter clicks or turns over slow, only cranks after tapping the housing with a hammer

Clean and tighten both battery cables and the ground strap before blaming the starter; tapping that wakes it up points to worn brushes or a sticking solenoid. Trace the circuit with the wiring diagram on page 87. If you remove the start-safety switch while testing, torque it to 29 to 32 ft-lbs on reinstall.

Manual Section: Starting Circuit Diagnosis
Brakes pull to one side or pedal goes to the floor after sitting over winter

Bleed both brake lines and check the equalizing valve for a stuck piston; uneven pressure is what pulls the tractor toward one side. Inspect the brake valve and pistons per the Steering and Brakes section on page 187. Verify hydraulic standby pressure holds 2250 psi, since these power brakes lose the pedal when supply pressure drops.

Manual Section: Steering and Brakes p. 187
Engine runs hot in the field, fan belt squeals under load at full throttle

Adjust the fan belt to 3/4-inch deflection under 20 lb. of force per the adjustment specs on page 24; a loose belt slips at rated speed and quits turning the fan. Replace a glazed belt outright. Then work through the overheating checks in the engine diagnosis charts starting on page 26 before harvest runs.
