Part of the John Deere Repair Manuals.
This is the combined technical manual for the John Deere 5045, 5055, 5065, 5075, 5103, 5203, 5204, 5303 and 5403 utility tractors (2005-2012) - and combined matters. One download holds both halves of the factory library: the full repair sections for teardown and rebuild of the 3-cylinder diesel, transmission, clutch, hydraulics, steering and brakes, plus the operation, tests and adjustments sections with operational checkout, pressure/flow test specs and wiring schematics. That is normally two separate purchases. These are simple mechanical tractors - no electronic fault codes to chase - so diagnosis comes down to the test procedures and specs in this book. Torque values, engine specs and fluid capacities are all in the General Information section up front.

John Deere 5045, 5055, 5065, 5075, 5103, 5203, 5204, 5303, 5403 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Engine will not start, cranks slowly, or dies under load
Usually air in the fuel system, a clogged filter, or water in the tank on these mechanical injection engines. The Fuel/Air Operation, Tests and Adjustments section gives the bleeding procedure and fuel system tests to isolate the restriction step by step.
Manual Section: Fuel/Air Operation, Tests and AdjustmentsEngine knocking under load
Check oil level first, then injection pump timing - a pump out of time knocks like a bad bearing. The Engine Operation, Tests and Adjustments section covers the injection timing check and compression test so you know before pulling the engine.
Manual Section: Engine Operation, Tests and AdjustmentsEngine overheating in the field
Start cheap: coolant level, plugged radiator core and grille screens, fan belt tension, radiator cap. The Operational Checkout Procedures section runs the cooling system through a quick whole-machine check so you catch the actual cause instead of guessing at a thermostat.
Manual Section: Operational Checkout ProceduresHydraulic power loss or heavy steering
On these tractors the transmission, hydraulics and steering share oil, so neglected fluid changes contaminate all three at once. The Hydraulic System Operation, Tests and Adjustments section gives pressure and flow tests to confirm whether it is the oil, the filter or the pump.
Manual Section: Hydraulic System Operation, Tests and AdjustmentsFrequently Asked Questions
My tractor cranks but will not start (or cranks slowly) - will this manual walk me through it?
Yes, and this is exactly the kind of problem it is built for. Start with the Operational Checkout Procedures section for a fast whole-machine check, then the Fuel/Air Operation, Tests and Adjustments section covers bleeding air from the fuel system, checking for water or dirt in the fuel, and filter service. On these mechanical injection engines, hard starting is nearly always fuel delivery or cold-weather oil drag, and the manual gives the test sequence to prove which one before you buy parts.
Does this cover injection pump timing? I have a knock that sounds like timing, not bearings.
It does. The Engine Operation, Tests and Adjustments section covers engine speed, compression and injection tests, including pump timing checks - which is where you sort a timing knock from a low-oil knock. If it turns out mechanical, the Engine Repair section takes the 3-cylinder diesel from removal through teardown and rebuild with the torque values from the General Information section.
Are wiring schematics included, or is this repair-only?
Schematics are in. The Electrical System Operation, Tests and Adjustments section has the wiring diagrams plus harness and component test procedures, and the Electrical Repair section covers alternator, starter, battery and wiring repair. The electrical system on these tractors is basic - charging, starting, lights and a few switches - so with the schematic and a multimeter you can run down most faults in an afternoon.
Which exact models and engines does it apply to?
All nine models: 5045, 5055, 5065, 5075, 5103, 5203, 5204, 5303 and 5403, model years roughly 2005-2012. These share the 3-cylinder diesel platform in naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions - for reference, the turbocharged 3029T in the 5103 is rated at 30.89 kW (42 hp) observed PTO power with a 106.5 mm bore and 110 mm stroke. Specs for each variant are broken out in the General Information section.
Can I do hydraulic and hitch work with this, like a weak 3-point or slow loader?
Yes. The Hydraulic System Operation, Tests and Adjustments section gives the pressure and flow tests to find out whether the pump, relief valve or a leaking cylinder is eating your power, and the Hydraulic Repair section covers pump, rockshaft, SCV and hitch overhaul. A weak hitch on these is often just contaminated transmission-hydraulic oil, so run the tests before condemning the pump.
