Part of the John Deere Repair Manuals.
Every one of the 258 pages in this John Deere 717 Technical Manual (OEM #TM2043 JUN02) covers the Mini-Frame Z-Trak family, 717 and 727 alike, from carburetor jetting to caster wheel yokes. You get complete wiring schematics for the electrical system, hydraulic circuit diagrams for the hydrostatic power train, and a full troubleshooting section that walks you through circuit diagnosis instead of leaving you to guess. Exploded views back up the attachment and brake teardowns, and torque tables run from the voltage regulator down to the float chamber screws. Torque the voltage regulator/rectifier mounting screw to 3.4 N·m and set the float chamber screw at 4 N·m, and you're working from the same numbers Deere's own techs use. Your mower's dead in the yard, and forum guesses won't cut it. Bookmarked for quick jumps between Engine, Electrical, Hydrostatic, and Brakes sections, this PDF opens right on your phone at the machine.

John Deere 717 & 727 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Poor traction or no forward movement after service, hydrostatic system won't build pressure
Jack up the rear wheels so they spin freely, then crack the relief valve or bleed bolt on the hydrostatic pump to purge trapped air. Cycle the motion control lever through full forward and reverse strokes several times while bleeding. Check pump routing against the hydraulic schematic on page 175 if pressure still won't build.
Manual Section: Hydrostatic Power Train Tests and Adjustments p. 175Intermittent stalling or no-spark condition, engine dies without warning during use
Test ignition coil primary resistance (infinity or 2k-18k ohms depending on polarity) and secondary resistance against the 8k-11k ohm spec on page 105. Check the air gap between the coil and flywheel magnets, setting it to 0.2-0.4 mm (0.008-0.016 in.) per page 33, and torque coil mounting screws to 5.9 N•m (52 lb-in).
Manual Section: Electrical Tests and Adjustments p. 33Drive belt slips, squeals, or jumps off the mower deck idler pulley
Measure the mower deck belt tension spring length and compare it to the 205-215 mm (8-8.5 in.) spec on page 221. Inspect the idler pulley bearing for play and check the belt itself for glazing or cracking. Replace the belt if glazed, and torque blade cap screws to 122 N•m (90 lb-ft) while the deck is off.
Manual Section: Attachments Diagnostics p. 221Frequently Asked Questions
How do I reset the transmission on a John Deere 717A or 727A?
To reset the hydrostatic transmission, perform the bleeding procedure. Drive the machine forward approximately 20 feet, then make two hard left turns, followed by two hard right turns. Drive the machine in reverse approximately 10 feet, then turn the key switch to STOP position. Check the oil level at the hydraulic reservoir and add oil as needed. This procedure is detailed on page 179. p. 179
How do you fix john Deere 717/727 PTO blades disengage unexpectedly or won't engage, cutting intermittently?
Check that the voltage regulator mounting cap screws are torqued to 3.4 N•m (30 lb-in) per the page 32 spec, then test PTO clutch coil resistance against the 2.84 ohm value on page 105. Clean corroded ground terminals at the clutch connector and inspect the PTO belt for glazing or slip before condemning the switch. p. 105
How do you fix engine surges, bogs, or dies under load, running rough at partial throttle?
Work through the engine troubleshooting procedures starting. Pull the carburetor bowl and verify the float sits parallel with the carburetor body per the page 32 spec; a bent float drips fuel constantly and causes bogging. Torque the carburetor mounting fasteners to 5.9 N•m (52 lb-in) on page 59 before reinstalling.
How do you fix rear wheels won't roll freely for towing, transmission stays locked in gear?
Loosen the lock nut and center bolt on the hydrostatic pump to shift it into freewheel mode before towing. Trace the pump linkage against the hydraulic schematic on page 175 to confirm you're moving the correct lever. After towing, retighten and torque the damper nut to 20 N•m (15 ft-lb) per page 169. p. 169
