Part of the John Deere Repair Manuals.
Gas engine, electrical, hydraulic power train and attachments: TM2133, the 156-page John Deere 7H17 technical manual PDF, walks each of these end to end for the 7H17 and 7H19 commercial walk-behind mowers. Electrical schematics and harness drawings lay out the wiring, while the power train section pairs hydraulic schematics with diagnostics and repair for the hydrostatic drive. Torque tables cover metric and inch fasteners. Face seal and O-ring boss fitting values follow, plus fuel, engine oil and hydrostatic transmission oil guidance. Fill the crankcase to 1.8 L (1.9 US qt) when the filter is changed, and gap the spark plug at 0.75 mm (0.030 in.). The task you bring may be tracing a fault through the electrical harness connections or following oil flow through the hydrostatic power train circuit. With text search and bookmarks, you reach Engine Tests and Adjustments quickly and finish that plug service at Deere's 22 N•m (195 lb-in.).

John Deere 7H17, 7H19 Common Problems This Manual Covers
John Deere 7H17 and 7H19 mower engine hard to start with weak or no blue spark
Test for spark with the travel speed lever in neutral, PTO off and park brake on. Keep hands clear because the engine may rotate at any time, and hold the plug away from the plug hole (page 34). No strong blue spark: replace the plug, gapped to 0.75 mm (0.030 in.) and torqued to 22 N•m (195 lb-in.) per page 23. Still weak? Check the high tension lead, ignition coil air gap and pulser coil.
Manual Section: Engine Troubleshooting Guide p. 34Engine hard to start with strong spark, spark plug electrodes wet after several cranking attempts
Check compression first, keeping hands away from moving parts while cranking (page 34). Look for at least 390 kPa (57 psi) and no more than 41 kPa (6 psi) between cylinders, per page 24. If compression is good and the plug comes out wet, look for excessive choke use, a plugged air cleaner or carburetor float level set too high. Dry electrodes point to the fuel tank and lines. Low compression: inspect rings, cylinder and cylinder head.
Manual Section: Engine Troubleshooting Guide p. 34Engine runs erratically under normal operation, with low fuel delivery at the fuel pump
Test fuel pump delivery first. Gasoline is extremely flammable, so do not smoke, and work in a ventilated area away from open flame, sparks and pilot lights (page 42). If delivery is low, clean plugged air and fuel passages in the carburetor. If delivery is normal, check for contamination, or an air or vapor lock in the fuel tank and lines, before you touch the carburetor.
Manual Section: Engine Troubleshooting Guide p. 34Engine stalls or rpm drops at a certain point when throttle is opened by hand
Check for unusual smoke from the muffler and adjust the choke if you see it. If rpm drops as the throttle opens, clean the carburetor interior. Check for air being sucked at the carburetor or intake manifold flanges; tighten the flange nuts or replace the damaged gasket. Let the engine cool before checking valves, since it will be hot (page 38), then set clearance cold to 0.10 to 0.15 mm (0.004 to 0.006 in.) per page 39.
Manual Section: Engine Troubleshooting Guide p. 34Gas engine oil consumption is excessive, with level dropping quickly between dipstick checks
Check compression, keeping hands clear of moving parts while cranking (page 34). Look for at least 390 kPa (57 psi) and no more than 41 kPa (6 psi) between cylinders (page 24). If it passes, inspect for oil leaks, high oil level, a plugged oil ring groove, oil seals, a clogged breather valve, a plugged breather drain back hole and incorrect viscosity. Low compression means worn, stuck or broken rings or a worn cylinder bore.
Manual Section: Engine Troubleshooting Guide p. 34Frequently Asked Questions
How do I troubleshoot a John Deere 7H17/7H19 that will not start?
To troubleshoot a no-start condition, first verify a strong blue spark using the spark test on page 42. If spark is present, check compression using the cylinder compression pressure test on page 39. If compression is low, inspect piston rings and cylinder for wear as described on page 59. p. 34
What are the torque specifications for the John Deere 7H17/7H19 spark plug?
The spark plug torque for the FH541V and FH580V engines is 22 N•m (195 lb-in.). p. 23
