An hour from now you could have the shroud off your F710 or F725 and this John Deere F710, F725 Technical Manual PDF open to the right procedure: all 648 pages of factory service data, published as TM1493 for both front mowers, the F710 paired with a 48-inch deck and the F725 with a 54-inch deck (p.41), the only two decks this manual covers. Wiring diagrams and hydraulic schematics back up separate tests-and-adjustments chapters for the FC540V and FD590V engines, so diagnosis on either machine starts at a component location drawing and ends at a measured pass-fail value. Repair chapters walk the hydrostatic transmission, steering, brakes, PTO assembly, and mower deck from removal through installation. Set the electric PTO clutch air gap between 0.38 and 0.64 mm. Guess wrong on that clutch and you buy it twice. Confirm at least 12.4 volts at the battery before you condemn a slow starter. Bookmarked and text searchable, this PDF is yours to keep once downloaded, for as long as the mower lives in your shed.

John Deere F710, F725 Common Problems This Manual Covers

John Deere F710/F725 front mower PTO clutch drops out mid-mow, restarts only after cycling the switch

Test the PTO clutch coil before buying parts: resistance should read 2.4 to 2.7 ohms and current draw 3.6 to 4.4 amps, specs on pages 436 and 499. A shorted coil pulls extra current and kicks the switch off hot. Set the clutch air gap to 0.38 to 0.64 mm (0.015 to 0.025 in.) per pages 437 and 500, and clean the connector.

Manual Section: Electrical Operation Tests and Adjustments FC540V Engine p. 436
Engine starts and mows fine, then dies after 20 to 30 minutes and restarts once cooled

Check spark when it dies: pull a plug and check the gap (0.7 to 0.8 mm on the FC540V, 1.0 to 1.1 mm on the FD590V, spec table on page 238), then test for spark hot. No spark points to a failing igniter. If spark is good, replace the fuel filter and crack the gas cap to rule out a plugged vent. Diagnosis charts start on page 276 (FC540V) or page 326 (FD590V).

Manual Section: Test and Adjustment Specifications/Operational Checkout Procedure p. 238
Engine cranks slowly or clicks and will not turn over after winter storage

Charge and load test the battery before condemning the starter; you want at least 12.4 volts, the spec on pages 448 and 513. Clean both cable ends and the frame ground. Then run a starter draw test: maximum 85 amps at a minimum 500 rpm cranking speed, pages 446 and 511. Higher draw with a good battery means the starter is done.

Manual Section: Electrical Operation Tests and Adjustments FC540V Engine p. 448
Mower deck cuts unevenly or leaves uncut strips even with sharp blades

Check the blade drive first: PTO clutch not slipping, PTO and mower belts properly routed and not worn, and sheaves tight on both gearboxes (page 636). If the drive checks out, verify deck leveling with a height gauge: side to side, the outside blade tips should be within 3 mm (1/8 in.) of each other, adjusted with the caster wheel shims (page 638). Front to back, the center blade should sit 3 to 8 mm (1/8 to 5/16 in.) lower in front than the outside blades, adjusted at the link adjusters (page 639).

Manual Section: Miscellaneous Operation Tests and Adjustments p. 636
Mower deck lift is slow or the deck drops on its own in transport

Verify system relief pressure before pulling anything apart: hook up a gauge per the hydraulic test procedure on page 614 and look for a minimum of 3620 kPa (525 psi). Low reading points to the relief valve or a tired pump. If pressure checks out, test the lift cylinder for internal leakage and inspect the lines for seepage.
