Find the identification plate before you order: this book is written for the New Holland F480, built around the N844L-D diesel, and the Tractor Identification pages show where the model and serial numbers are stamped so you can confirm the fit.

Inside are 178 pages covering the controls and instrument panel, the range gear and shuttle transmission, and Field Operations: Thermostart starting, power take-off, hydraulic lift, Cat. II three-point linkage, remote control valves, wheel track adjustment, tyres and ballasting. Lubrication and Maintenance carries the 10-hour daily checks through the 50, 300, 600 and 1200-hour services, with capacities and filter tightening figures. Troubleshooting charts sort engine, electrical, hydraulic, three-point linkage and brake faults.

With this PDF on the phone in the shop, you can trace the fault, do the service and get back in the field.

New Holland F480 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Hard starting after the tractor sits

For an engine that will not start or is difficult to start, the troubleshooting table lists an incorrect starting procedure, low or empty fuel, air in the fuel system (bleed the fuel system), the wrong engine oil viscosity, fuel not suited to the ambient temperature, a contaminated fuel system, a clogged fuel filter (replace the element) and a fuel injector fault (contact your dealer) (page 143). The Thermostart cold-start sequence is described on page 48.

Manual Section: Field Operations p. 143
Three-point linkage lifts slowly or drifts down

An implement that sinks while you drive to the headland, or that will not raise under load, points at the lift, the linkage settings or the hydraulic circuit feeding them. Troubleshooting has separate fault charts for the Hydraulic System and the Three-Point Linkage so you can split the two before pulling anything apart. The hydraulic chart lists low oil level (top up the system), a clogged hydraulic filter (replace it) and a system fault (contact your dealer) (page 147).

Manual Section: Troubleshooting p. 147
PTO will not engage or stalls the implement

Mower and baler work stops fast when the PTO drops out or refuses to take up drive. Field Operations covers power take-off operation, shaft selection and how the drive is engaged, which is where most of these complaints are settled without a workshop visit.

Manual Section: Field Operations p. 62
Dead battery on cold mornings

Slow cranking on a frosty start is often a battery that has been standing partly discharged rather than a starter fault. If the battery voltage is around 12.30 V or lower, recharge it immediately with a current equal to 1/10 of its capacity in Ah (page 132); the tractor carries a 100 Ah battery under the right side (page 120), and the storage pages cover battery maintenance over the winter (page 150).

Manual Section: Lubrication and Maintenance p. 132
Power loss in dusty field conditions

Chaff and dust choke the air filter faster than any hour-based schedule predicts, and the tractor goes soft under load and smokes. Lubrication and Maintenance covers cleaning the element, including the 5.9 bar limit for compressed air, so you do not blow a hole in it.

Manual Section: Lubrication and Maintenance p. 114
Wheel nuts loosening after a track change

Move the wheels in or out for row crop work and the disk nuts need rechecking, or they work loose and elongate the holes. The maintenance section lists the front and rear axle hub and rim disk nut torque figures for the 4WD tractor.

Manual Section: Lubrication and Maintenance p. 113
Weak lift capacity on heavy implements

When a loaded implement will not come up to full height, you need a target pressure before you start blaming the pump. Specifications and Data gives the hydraulic system relief valve calibration of 137 bar, along with transmission and PTO data to check the rest of the driveline against.

Manual Section: Specifications and Data p. 162

Frequently Asked Questions

Which tractor does this manual cover?

It is the New Holland F480 operator manual, publication 84409819, for the tractor fitted with the N844L-D diesel engine. The Introduction and Safety Measures section includes Tractor Identification, showing where the model and serial numbers are stamped so you can confirm your machine matches before you use it. p. 14

Is this a full workshop repair manual?

No. It is the operator manual: operation, controls, field settings, the full lubrication and maintenance schedule, and fault-finding. The Troubleshooting section carries symptom charts for the engine, electrical system, hydraulic system, three-point linkage and brakes, but it does not include engine or transmission overhaul procedures. p. 142

Does it give service intervals and oil capacities?

Yes. Lubrication and Maintenance covers the maintenance table, the 10-hour daily checks and the 50, 300, 600 and 1200-hour services, plus lubricant capacities and specifications. Figures such as the 54 litre fuel tank capacity and the filter tightening amounts are given there. p. 102

Will it help me set up a three-point implement?

Field Operations covers the Cat. II three-point linkage, hydraulic lift, remote control valves and power take-off, along with wheel track adjustment, tyre combinations and ballasting. That is enough to hitch, level and weight the tractor correctly for the implement you are running. p. 62

Will this New Holland F480 Operator Manual download right away?

You download the Operator Manual yourself: 178 pages, searchable PDF, available immediately. Keep a copy on every device you use.

Can I print specific sections of this New Holland F480 Operator Manual?

Print away. There is no DRM and no page limit. Many buyers print one chapter at a time and leave the rest on a tablet.
