New Holland TJ 275 to TJ 500 Common Problems This Manual Covers

New Holland TJ series ENG H20 TEMP warning with continuous alarm and flashing STOP ENGINE indicator

Stop the engine immediately when ENG H20 TEMP comes up; page 71 lists it as a critical fault. Check coolant level and inspect the radiator for blockage or other cause before you restart. After you correct the fault, press RESET on the Programmable Display to clear it. With the optional Performance Monitor, the tractor shuts itself down 30 seconds after the fault displays.

Manual Section: Critical Warning Displays p. 71
ENG OIL PRES low engine oil pressure warning on programmable display monitor with STOP ENGINE flashing

Shut the engine off right away. Page 71 treats ENG OIL PRES as a critical fault, and RESET will not silence it while the cause is still there. Check the engine oil level first, with the dipstick pushed completely down (page 185), then look for another cause. Oil capacity on page 175 differs by model, so confirm the figure for your tractor before filling. Clear the fault with RESET once it is fixed.

Manual Section: Critical Warning Displays p. 71
HYDRL OIL TEMP or TRANS OIL TEMP warning appearing on the programmable display during field work

Shut the engine off immediately on the critical HYDRL OIL TEMP display, check the hydraulic oil level and check for a blocked cooler, following page 71. For a critical TRANS OIL TEMP display, also shut the engine off immediately and check for a blocked cooler or other cause. If the approaching critical version shows instead (page 72), check for a blocked air cooler, and if the warning persists, contact your dealer.

Manual Section: Critical Warning Displays p. 71
HITCH OFF LINE or TRANS OFF LINE message on display with hitch or transmission controls inoperative

Check fuses #36 and #41 for HITCH OFF LINE, or fuses #36 and #39 for TRANS OFF LINE, and replace them if needed, following page 71. AUX OFF LINE points to fuses #36 and #40. Do not run the tractor with the fuse/relay cover removed, because page 60 warns that this causes damage. If the condition persists with good fuses, contact your dealer.

Manual Section: Non-Critical Warning Displays p. 71
LOW BATTERY warning below 11 volts with discharged battery showing no voltage across terminals

Check the alternator belt and battery water level (battery acid causes severe burns, so avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing, page 204), then test the battery, as page 74 directs. If a battery is discharged, disconnect the negative cable and put a voltmeter across the terminals (page 230). No voltage means the battery has an internal open circuit, so replace it. Never connect a charger or auxiliary battery to it, because a spark can make it explode. Charge batteries only in a well ventilated area, and never charge a frozen one.

Manual Section: Battery Troubleshooting p. 230
TURN PTO OFF, AUX NEUTRAL or HITCH CAPTURE warning appearing on the display at startup

Move the PTO switch to OFF, return the remote hydraulic levers to neutral, and set the hitch position control to match the actual hitch position, following page 73. RESET will not clear these warnings. Before you start the engine, verify that all operating controls are in neutral or park lock (page 85). A HITCH SETUP or AUX SETUP message means the system needs calibration, so contact your dealer.

Manual Section: Diagnostic Warning Displays p. 73
