John Deere Sabre 1438GS-2046HV Series Common Problems This Manual Covers

John Deere lawn tractor engine dies when hot and will not restart, no click from fuel solenoid

Check for a click at the carburetor fuel shut-off solenoid when you turn the key on. No click means the solenoid or its feed circuit is dead; work through the fuel solenoid tests in the Electrical section starting on page 153. Torque the replacement solenoid to 5 N•m (45 lb-in.) and confirm the click returns.

Manual Section: Electrical p. 153
Mower blades will not engage or PTO clutch cuts out randomly during mowing

Check the seat, brake, and PTO interlock switches before condemning the electric clutch. Adjust the brake switch so the plunger sits 3 mm (1/8 in.) from bottoming out, per the procedure on page 185. Clean and tighten the clutch connector at the engine, then test engagement. If the clutch still drops out hot, replace it.

Manual Section: Electrical p. 185
Tractor will not move or loses drive when transmission engaged, traction belt slips under load

Verify the shift lever is not sitting in neutral, then inspect the traction drive belt for glazing and stretch. On gear-drive models, replace the belt if its effective length exceeds 2736 mm (107.72 in.); a new belt measures 2686 mm (105.75 in.). Work the lack-of-drive chart in the Gear Power Train section starting on page 259.

Manual Section: Gear Power Train p. 259
Engine knocks or runs rough at full throttle with vibration through the mower deck

Check the blade cap screws first, since loose blades mimic engine knock. Torque them to 46 - 65 N•m (34 - 48 lb-ft) as specified on page 401. Then pull the spark plug, inspect it for fouling, and gap the replacement to 0.76 mm (0.030 in.). Drain stale fuel from the tank and refill with fresh gasoline.

Manual Section: Attachments p. 401
Engine cranks slowly or will not turn over after sitting, battery drains overnight

Test the battery before anything else; it must deliver 230 cranking amps at 0° C (32° F). Clean and tighten corroded terminals, then measure starting motor draw during cranking. A reading above 35 amps, covered on page 183, points to a dragging starter or a binding engine. Finish with the battery-goes-dead chart in the Electrical section.

Manual Section: Electrical p. 183

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the required fluids and their capacities for this machine?

The machine requires unleaded gasoline with a minimum of 87 octane. For single-cylinder engines, the crankcase oil capacity is 1.42 L (1.5 qt) of SAE 30W or 10W30 oil. The Hydrostatic Transmission K51 requires 2.5 L (2.4 qt) of 10W30 Engine Oil, Class CD, while the Gear Transaxle uses 0.64 kg (1.406 lbs) of Shell Darina® D Grease. p. 11

How should I troubleshoot an engine that will not crank?

To troubleshoot an engine that will not crank, first check if the battery voltage is 12.4 volts or higher. If not, charge the battery and perform a no-load test. If the battery voltage is still below 12.4 volts, the battery is defective. If the battery is good, check if the starter solenoid clicks when the ignition switch is turned to START. p. 33

What are the valve clearance specifications for single-cylinder engines?

For 14-16 HP single-cylinder engines, the intake valve clearance should be 0.13-0.18 mm (0.005-0.007 in.) and the exhaust valve clearance should be 0.23-0.28 mm (0.009-0.011 in.). These specifications are critical for proper engine performance. p. 27

What are some key torque specifications for single-cylinder engine components?

For single-cylinder engines, the flywheel nut should be tightened to 115.6 N•m (85 lb-ft), and the cylinder head cap screws (final) to 24.9 N•m (220 lb-in.). The spark plug torque specification is 20 N•m (180 lb-in.), and the connecting rod cap screws (287700/311777) are 20.9 N•m (185 lb-in.). p. 30

What are the common electrical problems listed for troubleshooting?

Common electrical problems include the engine not cranking, the battery going dead or overcharging, and headlights not lighting up. Other issues involve the fuel shut-off solenoid not opening or closing, and the engine dying when the brake or blade lever is released. p. 164
