Part of the John Deere Repair Manuals.
This is the John Deere technical manual covering the X700 series garden tractors built from 2002 to 2006, including the X740 and diesel X748. It covers both engines these machines shipped with - the Kawasaki FD671D gas twin and the Yanmar 3TNV76 diesel - plus the hydrostatic transaxle, PTO clutch and brake, charging and starting circuits, steering, brakes, and attachment mounting. You get full wiring schematics for the ignition circuit, key switch, relays, and coils, along with fastener torque tables, fluid specs, and step-by-step diagnostics. These are pre-fault-code machines, so troubleshooting means a test light, a pressure gauge, and this book. If your tractor lost drive on a hill or cranks without firing, the answer is in here.

John Deere X700, X740, X748 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Engine overheating or coolant on the ground under the diesel
Check the radiator, hose connections, and coolant condition against the coolant specifications in the manual. The engine section covers the cooling system for both the FD671D and the 3TNV76, with diagnostics and testing procedures to isolate a leak from internal contamination.
Manual Section: Engine (FD671D / 3TNV76) - Cooling p. 24PTO engages with a bang, deck vibrates, or cut quality has gone downhill
The Power Train section covers PTO clutch and PTO brake service, and the attachments section covers mounting and adjustment so you can level the deck properly. Between those two you can rule out clutch wear, belt slip, and a deck sitting crooked.
Manual Section: Power Train - Hydrostatic (PTO) / Steering, Brakes, Attachments p. 493Gas engine surges at idle, hunts under load, or won't hold governed speed
The engine section gives throttle and choke adjustment procedures plus the target speeds: slow idle 1550 rpm and fast idle 3550 rpm, each plus or minus 25 rpm, and spark plug gap of 0.75 mm (0.030 in.). Set it to spec before chasing carburetor gremlins.
Manual Section: Engine (FD671D) - Diagnostics, Throttle and Choke Adjustments p. 151Frequently Asked Questions
My X700 series tractor barely moves or won't climb a slope anymore. Does this manual cover the hydrostatic transaxle?
Yes, and this is the number one complaint on these machines. The Power Train section covers the hydrostatic transaxle, and the Hydraulics section gives you the inspection procedure and pressure specifications so you can test before you tear anything apart. Nine times out of ten weak drive traces back to degraded or low fluid, and the manual walks you through checking it properly instead of guessing. p. 534
Does this manual include the Yanmar diesel in the X748, or just the gas engine?
Both. The engine section covers the Kawasaki FD671D gas twin and the Yanmar 3TNV76 diesel - lubrication, cooling, fuel and air systems, diagnostics, and compression testing for each. If you bought the diesel X748, you are not stuck with a gas-only book. p. 131
Are there wiring diagrams? My gauges act up and the tractor sometimes won't crank.
Yes. The Electrical section has schematics for the ignition circuit, key switch, relays, and ignition coils, plus battery, charging system, and starter motor testing. These tractors have no fault-code system, so a schematic and a meter are how you chase an intermittent cluster or a no-crank. This manual gives you both. p. 373
Does it list torque values for fasteners?
The Specifications section includes metric and inch fastener torque tables plus fitting torques, along with fuel requirements and engine oil and coolant specs. For component-specific values like spindle or wheel hardware, check the relevant repair section rather than trusting numbers off a forum. p. 12
Can I check engine health myself before deciding on a rebuild?
Yes. The manual gives you the pass/fail numbers: minimum cylinder compression on the FD671D is 620 kPa (90 psi), minimum oil pressure is 276 kPa (40 psi), and valve clearance is 0.15 mm (0.006 in.) cold on intake and exhaust. Run a compression test per the procedure and you will know in an afternoon whether the engine is worth opening up. p. 26
