John Deere 5055E, 5065E, 5075E Common Problems This Manual Covers
John Deere 5055E engine fails to start or cranks but never fires
Drain and inspect the fuel filter assembly for water contamination or debris, replace if clogged. Verify the tank isn't empty, capacity is 82±4 L (21.65±1.06 gal) per page 70. Bleed air from the injection pump lines using procedures beginning page 142 before cranking again.
Manual Section: Fuel and Air Intake System Repair p. 142Hard starting in cold weather despite a recently replaced battery and fuel filter
Inspect the battery cable connections and ground strap for corrosion, a fully charged battery should read above 12.4V at rest. Bleed air from the fuel lines at the injection pump per procedures starting page 142. Check the fuel for winter-blend gelling before condemning the electrical system.
Manual Section: Electrical Repair p. 173Hydraulic system loses pressure and loader response goes sluggish after two to three hours of operation
Remove and inspect the hydraulic oil pick-up screen for debris per procedures starting page 379, a restricted screen chokes flow as oil heats and expands. Check fluid level and condition. Maximum implement pressure should read 19000—20000 kPa (190—200 bar), if it falls short, torque the hydraulic oil filter cap screws to 70 N·m (52 lb-ft) on reassembly and retest.
Manual Section: Hydraulic Repair p. 379Transmission slips or grinds when shifting under load, especially in 4WD mode
Check the transmission-hydraulic oil level and condition first, low or contaminated fluid is the most common cause of slip and grinding under load. Inspect the clutch disc and pressure plate for wear using Clutch Housing procedures starting page 240. If slip shows up near PTO engagement, verify the rear PTO drive shaft cap screws are torqued to 88 N·m (65 lb-ft).
Manual Section: Power Train Repair p. 240Engine overheats excessively under normal load despite full coolant and a clean radiator
Check coolant level against the 2.9L engine cooling system capacity of 10 L (2.6 gal) per page 526, top off if low. Test the thermostat for sticking and inspect the water pump for weeping or leakage at the shaft seal. If replacing the pump, torque the mounting nuts to 30 N·m (22 lb-ft) per page 380.
Manual Section: Cooling System Component Repair p. 526Frequently Asked Questions
What are the torque specifications for the John Deere 5055E engine mounting bolts?
The torque specification for the Engine to Front Support Top Cap Screws is 290 N·m, and for the Engine to Front Support Nut, it is 165 N·m. For the Center Control Console Cap Screws, the torque is 70 N·m. For complete engine repair information, refer to the PowerTech 2.9L Diesel Engines component technical manual (CTM). p. 88
What are the replacement specifications for the hydraulic oil filter cap screws?
The hydraulic oil filter cap screws should be tightened to a torque of 70 N·m (52 lb-ft) during installation. Always use new O-rings when replacing the hydraulic filter assembly to prevent leaks. p. 397
What are the recommended engine oil viscosities for different air temperature ranges for John Deere 5055E, 5065E, 5075E tractors?
The manual provides a chart for oil viscosities based on air temperature ranges. For temperatures from -40°C (-40°F) to 50°C (122°F), various SAE viscosities are shown, including SAE 15W-40, SAE 10W-30, SAE 5W-30, SAE 0W-40, SAE 30, and SAE 40. John Deere Plus-50 II oil is preferred, and John Deere Plus-50 is also recommended. p. 71
What is the cooling system capacity for John Deere 5055E, 5065E, 5075E tractors?
The approximate capacity of the cooling system for these tractors is 9.5 L (10 qt). p. 112
What is the specified fan belt tension for John Deere 5055E, 5065E, 5075E tractors?
For a new fan/alternator belt, the tension should result in 8 mm - 10 mm deflection with a 90 N (20 lb-force) applied halfway between the pulleys. For a used belt, the tension should result in 19 mm deflection with the same 90 N (20 lb-force) applied. p. 131
